Well HD and sloan I tested a purchase your way: I had a person send an email to inquire about a jacket and cost delivered to US. I also had them ask about some measurements and sizing questions. Waited 2 days got a reply and the total cost delivered was 550 GBP for the jacket plus 40GBP delivery. The person told them they would "get back" to them with their decision. Total cost HD and Sloan187 way: 590 GBP correction: I made slight error it was plus 50GBP for the special leather just got 2nd email notifying me, total if ordered 640 GBP

I then called them on the EXACT SAME JACKET in the same size, leather, and color. I reminded the representative I was outside the EU and would pay immediately if we could get an agreed price. The rep said "I see you have made prior purchases from us" let me check on one thing. He came back a moment later and said if I bought and paid while on the telephone they would sell and deliver the jacket for 325 GBP total..

I paid and got it for 325 GBP so I am a "bad" person who "beats up" people for lower prices.

I ended up with 265 GBP or 400 USD left in my pocket so my "methods" work well for me. Correction:

Ends up being 50 more GBP less or another $75.5 USD savings. I was not charges the "premium" for the leather either.

So I will take that 315 GBP or $475.50 savings offered :decision:

I will always offer what I am willing to pay for any transaction I am involved. If the seller does not want my money I move on and find one who will take it. Real simple.

20% has nothing to do with squeezing anyone, unless you ask for it in an EU-EU transaction. In that case it is equal to asking for a 20% rebate.

Again, if a EU based company ships a product to a non-EU country, no VAT is required to be paid or charged by the company. They have bookkeepers for checking that. Deducting 20% (the VAT that normally goes to the tax people, but in this case not) from the price including the VAT keeps the profit margin for the company the same as with a transaction between two EU countries including the 20% VAT. No extra rebate requested.

I haggle when dealing with used clothes, not when buying new. I also request not to pay the VAT if it is not applicable by law.
