Fake anything makes me flinch. If it ain't real I just go without. Maybe some peaches, pears or othe fruit would suffice for me.

I get the feeling that eating/dining is one area in which we are a lot more extravagant than our Golden Age counterparts. Especially when it comes to inventive ways to use bacon.

I bet they thought up inventive ways to use bacon as well. In my MacArthur WWII cookbook, they use bacon and bacon grease in just about everything.
