Well, even the most formal men's hat is not worn indoors, fine club or not. That's why checkrooms were invented.

I thought they could be referring to the actual wearing of hats inside, which we agree would be perfectly fine, but the wording also allows for the interpretation that they just throw all kinds of lids in the same bag and exclude them altogether.

I would like to learn it is your interpretation the one that is correct.

Of course. There is also a small, windowless room inside the club where you can use your cell phone. Just keep the door closed at all times.

.

Just so you know, now, mentally, your (beautiful!) daughter reads all your posts, and its adding a note of surreal delight to messages like this.

Smart casual as a minimum for men, no long pants for women, dresses for them. Men preferrably in suits or in clothes that would pass for a suit. Ties optional but preferred, no loud, flashy pieces of jewellery (earrings, big chains & necklaces, bracelets, etc).

And certainly no JEANS.

I'm afraid I wouldn't go there very often, then.

You'll be pleased to know that LizzieMaine's interpretation is correct.

At the Claremont Country Club in Oakland, CA there is a sign on the front entrance stating "No Hats" and the club prohibits denim jeans. At The Peninsula Country Club in San Mateo, denim jeans are prohibited at all areas of the property including the golf course and employees of vendors. Therefore, even if the plumbing is plugged the plumber is not permitted to come onto the property in denim jeans.

Not that I am a big clubber, but I've seen more ads for clubs and events with dress codes that sound pretty cool. I haven't seen any restaurants with dress codes in awhile.

whats a cloak.?

I once went into a fairly fancy renovated upscale chinese restraunt, dressed with overcoat and fedora and asked the hostess where the cloak room was and she looks at me and says what is a cloak? I realized that society had dropped a notch or six. 59LARK.:eek:fftopic: :rage:

Was English her first language?

I don't like checking my coat anyway, but still, I hear coat-check a lot more often than I hear cloak room.

Yes, I don't know if it's regional, personal, or temporal but I think of "coat check" in that context. "Cloakroom" makes me think of school rooms.

Goodness me! I can only imagine the condition of the plumbing at the Peninsula Country Club in San Mateo !
I mean, do they want plumbers to go in tails and top hat to fix the bathrooms there? Honestly....... lol Let's get real please! lol

Coming in late, as I am, on this conversation I will do no more, at this point, than add that I have never been to a restaurant that requires a certain mode of dress and offer a few thoughts. Well, I have not. I'm not sure I would really care about dress code, either. I dress the way I do, but that does not mean others need or have to. Although, I do bemoan the "casualizing" of dress in society.

I avoid country clubs and jazz like that for personal reasons.

I would assume that restaurants banished required dress as a way to attract more customers and as a response to undeniable trends in attire. When walking around your average department store today who can possibly blame them? I wouldn't want to alienate 99.6 percent of my potential customers either. lol

Agreed! Isn't that what the service entrance is for?

I'm assuming all the vendors comply with the requirement, including the plumbers. When they built a new pro-shop I didn't see any of the contractors wearing denim.

To get back on topic; I also think a lot of the requirements of restaurants went wayside because of the threat of lawsuits from an aggreived "group" with an axe to grind and a lawyer willing to bring about a discrimination lawsuit.

I imagine it's losing business, not a lawsuit, that caused restaurants to modify their dress codes. I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that sweatsuit wearers aren't a protected class.
