What would you love to wear but have not?

Me, too. I don't think it would fit through a modern doorway, though. You'd be like Giselle in Enchanted trying to enter the apartment.

My friend is a seamstress of sorts and usually make victorian gowns and sells her milliner creations...she has interesting stories of trying to ride in her mini Cooper in her 18th C dress with panniers.

She has an ebay store. Her company name is TopRunway. I have ordered a dress from her and I love it! I sent her a picture from a 40s pattern illustration, my measurements and instructions (no lace, for example) and it was perfect. I am going to be ordering another dress from her as soon as I get some foundation garments and remeasure.

The only downside is she has a limited stock of fabrics and cannot take fabrics from customers due to customs. If I want a print, gingham or floral...too bad for me!

For me it would have to be, quite simply, original 1940s heels. They are hard to come by in a larger size (I'm a UK size 6 so a US 8.5) and when I do find some they are always incredibly narrow. It breaks my heart as I would love to own some. If only I had smaller feet!

Even though this is only a picture of the back, this is the most amazing dress. It was the wedding dress of Princess Sofia Magdalena of Sweden, and given that I have seen it in person, I can testify that it is truly an exquisite masterpiece.

I wear us 8.5 also. I find a pair fo 1940's heels that fit me years ago. I didn't get them because they were peeptoes and a little long for me (so my toes didn't peep). I have regreted it almost everyday as I never found another pair that came close to fitting.

I can't even come up with a single definitive answer because there's so much out there that I'd love to wear but don't have the income for!

I've always wanted a great, long 1930's formal gown, however, as I'm 5'2" I fear I'd be drowning in the thing. Also, an original burlesque outfit would be lovely. And a 1940's pink satin girdle. I had a deadstock one once (it was beautiful!) but it was high-waisted and hit me in all the wrong places. It was a beauty though!

Ah yes, Cynthia! I have had a few things from her, but both the dresses I got were too short in the waist - the second was a remake because the first one was too short! It's as if the asian tailors can't actually believe that my torso can be as long as it is...they have to take an inch or two off my measurements! And the lack of fabric choice is a total bummer. I'd love to see the dress you had made - or even just the picture you sent as I'd like to know her limitations (Mine was a very simple dress)

If you stick to pre-1935, it will make you look taller!
The late 30s, with full skirts, gathers etc., would probably look worse on you. But a bias cut slinky gown with vertical seaming would be perfect on you! Something like this:

I love that white dress!!!! My theory on wearing certain pieces of clothing - if you don't have an occasion to wear something - make an occasion! I love to host events and am always looking for new themes (and excuses to make that much longed for piece!) I wear my victorian or edwardian "costumes" for ladies teas on the lawn - and this year we are planning a "Jane Austin Tea," so we have an excuse to make new outfits!

It is gorgeous, isn't it? I'm not in the market for a wedding dress but that reminds me of an old friend of mine who used to say that if she wasn't married by age 40 she was going to throw herself a wedding reception without the wedding; she'd show up in a wedding dress and have loads of good food and all her friends just for the heck of it.
