Having now watched episode 4 of "The Night Of," I must revised my personal survival time estimate for prison down from 2-3 minutes to 30-60 seconds.

Separately, hopefully, there is a special place in hell for the fancy woman attorney from the big name law firm who dropped Naz as a client.

The season premiere of Showtime's Masters of Sex. This show was outstanding in its first season, but ultimately lost its way in seasons two and three in terms of storytelling. (Though the acting and production have remained excellent throughout.) It looks like the new season, poised to move the story ahead into seventies, is making an effort to get back to the show's basics, which is heartening. In any case, I'll keep watching, because it's great that Lizzy Caplan finally has a juicy lead role equal to her talents...

Also, the pilot episode of Better Things, the new FX show starring Pamela Adlon, written/produced by her and Louis C.K. A semi-autobiographical show about an LA-based working actress known primarily for supporting roles and voiceover parts, and a busy single mom of three girls... all of which she actually IS - the first episode (directed by C.K.) was promising. Less surreal than Louie, but just as well observed, with moments both funny and true.

Considering it was a pilot of a new, groundbreaking show and, thus, didn't have a template to follow saying this is how we do a philosophy driven sci-fi series - I think it is outstanding. While Shatner as Kirk is iconic for a good reason, not having known that at the time, I would have stayed with Hunter. I also love that Number One was a strong, smart woman - the show took a step backwards when they moved away from that.

And the plot is smart, thoughtful and intelligent, especially for the time. I could have done with Spock not yelling all his lines to, I guess, appear military, but overall, I loved it.

The History Channel had some documentaries on Sept. 11 yesterday afternoon, so I watched those. I always try and watch a few things on every anniversary of 9-11. It's hard, but necessary.

I work on Wall Street and knew many, many people who died on 9/11 - including one of my two closest friends. Yesterday, as we always do on 9/11, I spoke to my mom and she mentioned someone I hadn't thought of since that day, but who died in the first tower. I felt a bit guilty as I can't even remember everyone I knew - it was such a brutal event.

NBC specifically wanted Number One off the show, as they insisted audiences wouldn't accept a woman with that level of responsibility. They wanted "too satanic looking" Mr. Spock off too, and Roddenberry felt he could only buck their demands on one character for the second pilot.

And while he's fine in the part, I'm really glad they didn't go with Hunter - he died in 1969 and wouldn't have been around for the revival of the Trek films... and likely there wouldn't have been all those later Trek series without them!

- Great bit of inside information. I'm not quite sure why the director, writers or whomever thought yelling his lines quite clearly would give the impression he was uncomfortable with English - most people stutter or speak softly or slowly when speaking in a language they are not familiar with. Most people yell when they are talking in the language they are comfortable with to a person who isn't familiar with that language - as if saying it louder will help the other person understand it.

Such a shame as I thought she was and would have been excellent in the role versus the empty "girl" roles they ended up giving her. She had a command quality about her. Having been in business long enough though, I understand the trade-offs - I can only fight for so many things and have to give "them" something - so I'm glad he kept Spock, but still a shame.

Kirk became iconic in a way that Hunter probably wouldn't have. Hunter was, I would have thought, a safer choice - very captain looking - whereas, Shatner had a bit of the unknown about him that made him more interesting. Shame about Hunter passing away so young.

Of course, if Hunter had become the Captain of the Enterprise, he never would have been injured by the explosion while filming in Spain. So he would most likely have survived at least long enough to make all the Trek movies! He would have turned 90 this year.

That's funny, I would have sworn I read once (don't remember where) that either NBC or Roddenberry wanted to replace Hunter when they did a new pilot which always surprised me as I thought he did a very good job. Your explanation makes more sense to me.
