I think I posted about this before (but, so far, our history hasn't come over to the new site - no complaints as I know this entire effort was massive and I simply thank the bartenders for all their hard work), but has anyone else been watching "Home Fires -" the new PBS show about how a small English village adjusts to life as WWII approaches. It, mainly, takes the perspective of the women (my guess, that's where the name comes from) and is absolutely beautifully filmed (and has wonderful introduction music) - the period sets, background, clothes, cars, architecture, etc. are incredible. I get so lost in watching those things that I have had to go back more than once to see what happened in the story. So far, the stories are fine, but not fantastic - a bit too soap opera like, a bit too predictable.

We've also been watching "Indian Summers," on PBS - basically I can say the same as a above: beautifully filmed / a bit to predictable and two dimensional.

Highest moment of cinema, to me. Rachel and Deckard, sweetest romance of all times.

"Supergirl" the first episode. I'm not a huge fan of the superhero genre (although, I think Chris Nolan's Batman movies - especially the second one - are some of the best films made in the last several decades), but wanted to see what they did with this one. Meh, seemed to be a by-the-numbers story and most of the special effects looked blatantly CGI to me (the bullet bouncing off her costume looked amateurish). She - whoever played Supergirl - did a good job of bringing a spark, emotion and personality to the average script.

I pretty much agree, though I also watch many of the other superhero shows (The Flash, Gotham, Agents of SHIELD) and have enjoyed most of the recent rounds of superhero films. On the basis of the pilot, the actress is the main reason to watch Supergirl. She's fantastic, hitting all the right notes and displaying a nearly Christopher Reeve level of sweet heroic vibe. Most of the rest of the stuff in the show - her Flash-style support team, the over the top villains, the whole Devil Wears Prada workplace comedy aspect, the stunt casting (former Superman Dean Cain and former Supergirl Helen Slater as her foster parents), the not-quite-Man-of-Steel/not-quite-Superman-Returns imagining of the Krypton stuff and "her cousin" (only seen from behind or at a distance, like Jesus in a fifties biblical epic!), the uneven effects work... didn't really make it for me.

But it's promising enough that I'll keep watching. (I mean: Gotham is terrible, but I keep watching!)

It is darker, and the writing isn't as tight. Plus, I feel like the show's humor isn't there. Music, which seems to be a staple of the show, is missing, too. Fourth episode is on tonight so we'll see how I feel after watching it.

The Walking Dead. Is it safe to say that the incredibly stupid plot device of episode 1 of this season is going to drive the entire season? I think so. That entire dumpster death sequence didn't make any sense. And if he comes back because the old "just screwin' with ya, folks", I think I'm going to stop watching the show. They aren't going anywhere worthwhile with the story if they have to rely on typical TV "dead/nope, not dead" bologna and plot devices that defy reason. Maybe it is a weak spot in the books. I haven't read them. Regardless, I view this present trajectory as weak, low quality.

Indian Summers. Good episode. I can flop and say I like where they're going a bit better.

Charlie Rose interviewing Bernie Sanders. I didn't know anything about Sanders, and I walked away feeling like I had a good idea. If you ask me, that is an unpredictable win for an audience in the context of politics. I like Rose, but he can be a stubborn prick. He kept pushing Sanders on the idea that his label of socialist was just a matter of semantics. Maybe it is, but Rose beat it like a dead horse. Good idea. Present a quality interview and then downgrade it because your personality stinks. It's on the Rose website if you want to watch it. I feel it is worth it.

Supernatural. This episode was a unique one, and it had all the elements that make this show great: music, humor, plot twists, etc.

Glad to hear about that. My wife and I love the story arcs, but really miss the frequent "one offs", you know, just hunting something. We've noticed the lack of the great classic rock soundtrack as well. I supposed that the costs of licensing music was getting expensive.

Good news in any event, and I'm looking fwd to getting home, however briefly!
