I wasn't claiming they were better films, just that they used the "digital backlot" methodology better.

That said, I personally like 300 BECAUSE it's just so insanely overwrought and nutso. (Plus I was a fan of The 300 Spartans in my youth and I'm a sucker for the story.) Conversely, Sin City has very quickly turned me off each time I've tried to watch it.

And note that I'm criticizing Sky Captain from a place of love - I was very excited when it came out, saw it theatrically, got the DVD... But I was never blind to its many faults, and alas, time hasn't improved it.

Regarding some of the other things that have been mentioned... The Shadow is far from the worst of the boomlet of comics/pulp films that followed in the wake of the 1989 Batman's success; I'd nominate The Phantom for that position. And The Spirit is just a misbegotten disaster from beginning to end: Will Eisner deserves better.

I never said you claimed they were better. I was just advocating for Sky Captain as a general point since the other two came up.

The biggest change is that the Cate Blanchett character doesn't exist, which removes a lot of the suspense about Ripley managing his false identity.

Yes, Cate's character lifts the original story a bit. That part was created for her and isn't in the book (as you probably know). I have to say I prefer Minghella's film to the Highsmith novel.

I watched "The Catcher Was a Spy" on the plane the other day. It's the story of Moe Berg, former Major League ballplayer who went on to join the OSS in WWII and was tasked with finding out where the Nazis were on building an atomic bomb, and if necessary, assassinating Werner Heisenberg. It was an OK film.

At the time, that movie was a big deal. Today, it might be hard to believe, when everything sexual is everywhere - ALL THE TIME - but in its day, "Basic Instinct's" gratuitous sex and lesbianism was envelope pushing.

Watched the original Blade on Netflix last night. Surprisingly, it held up pretty well and it was interesting to see how much The Matrix borrowed from Blade. One of the first Marvel superheros to make a decent movie!

I’ve seen this one many times and will watch it many times more. It always entertains me. It has a great cast. It also has some really interesting/entertaining/enjoyable voices to listen to.

"Horror Hotel" aka "The City of the Dead" - This British horror flick stars Christopher Lee and a few others as folks involved in a murder in a small New England town. It's clear from the opening and such that the perps of said murder are witches and warlocks using young women in ritual sacrifices. Supposedly set in New England it's easy to tell that it's done on the Shepperton Studio back lot. Several of the cars are clearly British and some of the American accents were charitable at best with one exception. Mr. Lee does an EXCELLENT American accent throughout and really sells it. The film, shot in glorious black and white, is still amazingly effective. I mean I got goosebumps several times. The climax scene in the graveyard is a corker... you could do much worse than this one on Halloween!

It's funny, I've seen "Gilda" ten or more times, but "Basic Instinct" twice. The first time I saw "Basic Instinct," I thought it was a pretty good movie, but it bored me and seemed very transparent the second time. "Gilda" however, (for me, anyway) holds up to multiple viewings.

Only saw "Basic Instinct" once, when it first came out on VHS. I was a student at the time and had gone around to a friend's house to meet him and go to some student fundraising event, but he wasn't home yet. His mother invited me in and the movie was playing. We sat there watching it until he came home. Probably not the most comfortable experience as a 19 yo, lol!!!!!

It didn't strike me as a good movie at all. I've seen Gilda a couple of times and it was definitely more watchable that I remmeber

with my mouth wide open in happy disbelief... when she
closed and locked the door to the shop as she looked at me
with those gorgeous eyes.

IMHO, that is one of the best "sex" scenes in any movie ever. A great example of not needing to show the act itself which would only have diminished the impact. And for all of Bogie's skills - and they are on display in this scene - Malone is the jet fuel for this one / she runs Bogie around that store on a leash that he doesn't even know is on.

(Course, BP was definitely moreso, given that it was distinctly African rather than African-American, but still. I suspect a lot of people backwhen didn't realise this was a Marvel picture. I wonder if it'll come up for redux at some point; I seem to recall it had a TV run for aseason or two in pre-Netflix days.

Was just talking about this with a coworker...I certainly don't think it needs a reboot, it still holds up quite well...but this is a character that might for a fun cameo in a deadpool flick.

I'd like to see a TV show revived. I know the big vampire boom has been and gone, but still... Deadpool could be a good place for it, AsBlade is another one that's unlikely to work in the context of the Avengers multi-supe approach.
