"The Heiress" - Amazing acting all way round.. They killed it, can't improve on that one.... nope, not one bit! The host did add that Errol Flynn turned down the role, it would've been his and Olivia's 9th film together.... Still, Monty wasn't half bad!

Worf

A great film with simply wonderful performances all around, courtesy of the brilliant William Wyler. (And a stunning set that per the fascinating book Celluloid Skyline is an extremely accurate reproduction of a wealthy single-family NYC brownstone of the period.) I'd argue that Clift was actually a far better choice for Morris than Flynn: he projects a weakness and unclear intent that would have come off as more obviously self-serving from Flynn.

For an interesting comparison, check out Washington Square (1997) with Jennifer Jason Leigh as Catherine, Albert Finney as Dr. Sloper, and Ben Chaplin as Morris.

"Morris... Morris! MORRIS!"

Monty did a good job, but there is something too "sleepy" in his style for him to have really killed it. Flynn, I think, would have brought the stronger verve of heartthrob and rogue that the roll needed. But even with Monty, the movie rocks and shows how a strong story that goes deep into human emotion doesn't need special effects, etc., just good writing, directing and acting.

Edit add: I wrote the above before reading Doctor Strange's comments - I understand his view and thought Monty did a good job and his "sleepiness" does blur the intent - which is important - but it also lacked, for me, a passion to truly drive the relationship. Also, if the character is a manipulating rogue, Flynn could have balanced romance and cold-calculation better, IMHO. That said, the movie is outstanding, so why, even if we could, mess with something so good.

' Outlaws & Angels' (2016)....a very violent, gritty, no holds barred western with some crusty characters. Good acting, tasty dialogue & plenty of twists & turns to keep you hooked. The only negative thing was the camera work which was a little shakey at times, other than that, a pleasant surprise.......a special mention for the make up & special effects guys who did a great job.

Stayed up much too late watching Mad Max: Fury Road, because I knew if I didn't I wouldn't see it. Missed the first ten minutes, but got the gist. Think I was more impressed with the fact that Charlize Theron's arm looked like it was really missing than any other visual in the film. Could definitely see the comparisons I'd read about to silent films, like Keaton's The General.

Overall, sorry I didn't see it in a theatre.

Watching Clint Eastwood’s “Dollar” Trilogy. (TCM)
Have sentimental value, especially the last one which saved my bacon when
in the military.

I think The Heiress is mainly Ralph Richardson's movie. Everything else in the movie is there just to underline his commanding performance as Dr. Sloper. He is very good at playing God. That's why it was natural for Terry Gilliam to cast him as God in Time Bandits.

Clift and de Havilland are also great and the ending is devastating.

A charming animated feature (very definitely for adults) from 2010, primarily in Spanish with subtitles, called Chico and Rita.

Set in the jazz clubs of forties Havana and New York, it includes "appearances" by real jazz and Latin music greats - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Thelonious Monk, Woody Herman, Chano Pozo, Tito Puente, etc. While there's nothing especially original about its fated-to-be-together-pianist-and-singer love story, it has fantastic music and beautiful animation. It's largely rotoscoped, with designs and effects from all over: character designs similar to Batman: The Animated Series, lovely dimensional sequences that look like both Disney multiplane camera and Fleischer turntable shots, psychedelia a la Waking Life...

Highly recommended for jazz fans!

Finally got around to watching "Carol"....what a disappointment. I lay it at the feet of the director. The emotional tone of the movie was so flat as to be comatose. I realize that was part of the artifice ...the emotional stilted '50s. But this was ridiculous. Also had problems with the character of Carol. She was a predator and even though Therese was of age Carol's behaviour was the classic "grooming and ingratiating" of a pedaphilic mind. We watched it on cable tv as a $1 movie of the week. As my wife stated...."I don't mind the waste of a $1 but I want my two hours back."

Ted 2. I realized at the end, the sadist thing about this movie was, it could have been a really great movie! If they just took out all the four letter words, drugs and other jokes for 14 rear old boys, it would have been a heartwarming movie.

Good Night, and Good Luck. Very well done. Especially good was the Orson Welles - Howard Hawks technique of overlapping dialogue. The Missus commented that it must have been a cheap movie because most of it took place in the television studio.
