"A Raisin in the Sun" 1961 with Sidney Poitier. As always I was taken aback by Poitier's mighty performance. He was such a convincing actor.

"Pennies from Heaven" a Bing Crosby movie from 1936 that, while showing the hardship of the depression, takes a somewhat light-hearted view as it ambles into some slapstick and silliness. That said, Bing's singing is great, as is an very early Louis Armstrong appearance and performance, and those two things alone make it worth watching.

Top Gun (1955) Not a bad movie and I will take a movie with Sterling Hayden over Tom Cruise any day of the week!

Another Sterling Hayden movie, Battle Taxi, also from 1955. Hayden may have gotten top billing, but the focus of the story is really on one of the men under his command--Lt. Pete Stacy (Arthur Franz), a former fighter pilot who is unimpressed and frustrated with having been transferred to a helicopter rescue unit. If you can make it to the end of this rather dull movie, you'll find out Lt. Stacy eventually comes to realize the value of his new assignment. This movie uses a good deal of stock, newsreel, and repeat footage that sometimes doesn't match the story they're trying to tell. Hayden and Franz work well in their scenes together, but overall I found it unsatisfying and would recommend it only to those who must see every Sterling Hayden movie.

"Ida" - Folks had told me this Polish film was great but I had no idea. Amazing little film shot in glorious Black and White. I was riveted. It's on Netflix... catch it now! This film couldn't have been made 10 years ago.

My wife and I had the same reaction when we saw the documentary!


I saw the new Avengers flick today with my son. We both enjoyed it a lot.

It is one of those very good movies - with a surprising strong cast - that flies under the radar. Also, it is another example of Welles' talent as an actor. "Citizen Kane" and Welles' own outsized personality has so overwhelmed his career that his outright talent as a very good actor is almost ignored.

I also love movies like this as they are like little quiet gems tucked away that I enjoy every time I happen to see them that only regular classic movie buffs know. They don't get the attention they deserve, but that also means you can enjoy them without having too much outside commentary running through your head. I saw part of "Casablanca" the other day, and while I enjoyed it, it is so over discussed and analyzed that it's like eating a dish and noticing each ingredient individually, I can't fully appreciate the combined flavor, i.e., the movie as it was intended.

Agreed - not great - but a good, simple animated movie with a nice period vibe.
