"The Malta Story" - C-Minus - Stodgy British post-war affair that takes what should be a thrilling story of a tiny island and its British garrison holding out against the might of the Luftwaffe and turns it into mush. Alec Guiness totally miscast and wasted. He wanders around for an hour and a half with this silly half smile on his face and about as much real emotion as a chamber pot. Jack Hawkins gives it his best but the whole enterprise is undone by a terrible script and wooden acting. Sigh what could've been. The only decent thing in the whole movie are all the glorious Spits and Beaufighters flitting about.

When I start looking at the jackets they're wearing or old cars in the movie instead
of the story content...that's a sure sign to make my exit !

Thanks for the warning Worf...;)

I watched "Touch Of Evil" this evening from the DVD of the restored Welles cut. As it had been a few years since I'd seen it, I'd forgotten just how awesome this film is. Always a good ride, and so original in style. Welles was a true genius.

It was also the first time I've watched it since realizing that Welles's considerable girth in this picture was a product of padding and facial appliances, as he was still a much slimmer man at the time of production than he'd become in his later years.

Just saw "Ender's Game". Thought it was pretty good, but haven't read the book.
The book is quite good and you don't really realize the kids are kids (thankfully). Just keep in mind the author has revised and added to his original book a number of times over the decades, so there are a thousand different versions out there.

Von Ryan's Express. I love Sinatra's performance.

Casablanca. The script is truly full of incredible lines which is amazing considering it was tinkered with by so many different people.

Great point on the tampered script not messing up the movie. I read a book a long time ago that basically said Casablanca was a sausage with many, many cooks constantly changing the recipe (script) even during shooting - usually a recipe for disaster - but it worked. Every once in awhile you can break all the rules and it works. Casablanca is movie serendipity.

A true gift from the cinematic gods!

"12 Years a Slave" - B+ - Difficult to sit through... amazing film making. Cries and gasps from the audience but no applause at the end. True and too true for words... I'm a little too wrung out to give a decent review, but I'd say see it. Several Oscar worthy performances and there should be some behind the scenes nods as well. Deep... deep.

Love me some Hammer films. :D

Black Belt Jones.
Jim Kelly (RIP) was a great martial artist, and International champion.
Some athletes can do almost anything, for Jim we went from football, to track, to basketball, to tennis (in the mid 70's).
He was even in Enter The Dragon.

"Re-watched Twelve Angry Men last night. A great film."
I used to like that one, but having seen so many real trials, and being on several juries myself, I know that the main plot point - that of a juror introducing new evidence in the jury room, would result in an *instant* mistrial. The plot just doesn't work after knowing that.
