The Stepfather (2009) - Awful movie - to be honest I was only half-watching it - not the kind of film you have to commit to and give your full attention - you knew what was going to happen from the get go. It was full of the usual cliches & "frights" you were anticipating, plenty of shots of the young attractive couple half dressed or in swimwear (mandatory in these kinds of movies) and a no surprises ending - predictable shlock.

I am halfway through PBS' "The Lady Vanishes." I recorded it this past Sunday. So far, I am enjoying the scenery and period details - clothes, cars, hotels and an incredibly beautiful train. That said, even knowing the general outline of the story (and having enjoyed the Hitchcock version several times, but not for many years), I am having trouble following - or, at least, being interested in - what is going on? Has anyone else seen this one? Does it get better?

Last night I watched Zack and Miri make a Porno. It was terrible. Kevin Smith may once have been able to go down some low avenues and still retain some charm, but not this time, not here. A lot of swearing — so that it no longer sounds "real", just try-hard, and a really bad romantic premise. It was hard to finish.

 

[Fading Fast]

I watched "Shopworn Angel" last night (recorded from TCM). The very quick plot summary (leaving the ending out) is that Jimmy Stewart plays a WWI Doughboy from Texas in NYC for a few days before he ships out. There he meets a successful, and supposedly street-smart, hardened stage actress, played by Margaret Sullavan who has an ongoing casual relationship / affair (murky because it's post pre-code, but I'd say affair) with Walter Pigeon, a sophisticated, cynical and wealthy backer of her shows. As Stewart starts to fall in love with Sullavan, she, after initially dismissing him as a silly hick, begins to warm up to him and questions her relationship with Pigeon. Pigeon, meanwhile, is also moving from dismissing Stewart as a rival to worrying about him.

The two challenges in the movie are that Sullavan, whom I am a big fan of from movies like "Shop Around the Corner" and "The Mortal Storm," is unconvincing as a cynical showgirl, but plays to her strength as the character's good side is brought out by Stewart's innate decency. Also, the rushed and muddled ending (I won't ruin it if you haven't seen it) needed more time to allow the nuances to play out if there was to be any verisimilitude as it is complicated and hard to believe.

That said, the good things are, notwithstanding the aforementioned comments on Sullivan, the three actors, who are pros, elevating a B picture and the time travel aspects: Walter Pidgeon has a Cary Grant style wardrobe - beautifully tailored suits, club collars with collar pins, ties with incredible texture (all this from a black and white movie), that fit with timeless elegance - and the apartment where Sullavan lives is perfect pre-war NY, fireplace, terrace and art deco lobby.

This is one to watch for the actors, the time-travel and, less so, the story.
