""Ai To Makoto" is a new Takashi Miike film, premiered on Cannes Film Festival 2012. Also titled "The Legend of Love & Sincerity", and based on a manga book, it is a modern teens drama romance, about a beauty who falls in love with a beast...

One day, the delinquent Makoto suddenly appears in front of Ai, an innocent A-student from a rich family who attends Aobadai High School. The moment she spots Makoto, she recognizes the scar on his forehead - a scar she had given him by accident at a ski resort during childhood.

Assuming that his bad behavior is caused by the scar, Ai feels responsible for his actions and decides to help him pull himself together. Ai secretly arranges for him to transfer to Aobadai, but "favor" proves to be an unwelcome one for Makoto. Her kindness is returned only with more bad behavior.

After trouble with the police, Makoto is kicked out of Aobadai and transferred to Hanazono High School, a notorious gang swamp. Makoto easily fights his way through the dangerous gang scene, and is welcomed by Yuki, the queen of Hanazono. Ai brushes aside her parents' objection and transfers to Hanazono, patiently devoting herself trusting that he can change. It makes Yuki realize her feelings for Makoto. Her feeling unreturned, Yuki decides to lure Makoto into battle by taking Ai as a hostage. Can Makoto save her life and win the battle?

"The Tree of Life" - B-minus - Daring, ambitious and beautifully filmed but so frustratingly ambiguous at the end as to leave me angry. The "dream/heaven" sequence was too long and too preachy. I enjoyed much of the film but the "2001 A space Odyessy" like opening and closing struck me as hollow and unnecessary. Still I'd recomend the film for students and film buffs.

I have found that it is more successful on repeat viewings, but there's no getting around that it's a way-strange flick. It's really an art film with no conventional narrative - and I don't quite understand why its studio/distributor and the critics put it out there for mainstream audiences. I'm sure it frustrated a majority of viewers. (After all, 2001 came out in a more experimental movie era, when sitting back and letting it wash over you was a better understood means of watching a film. Today's continually-overwhelmed-with-input audience doesn't even know how to slow down and let an unusual film percolate...)

Movie was GREAT, really. I'm fascinated by both directing and acting.. and I love the "love & rumble" theme.

Bought a 3D TV and Blu-Ray player yesterday (old set was knackered and this was cheap) and christened it with Life of Pi which I missed at the cinema... What an amazing visual treat it is! The imagery alone is enough to make you weep, its that staggeringly beautiful... and I really enjoyed the story as well; even the ending, which gets mixed responses.

A showcase for digital, that shows it can be used to create great art, and is not just a new way to 'cash-in'

The Memphis Belle and Red Tails. Is there no historical event that Hollywood can not mess up? The Belle came back without a scratch on her final mission, a Milk Run! Fighters never flew in tight formation, they zigzagged above the bombers to keep their speed up. And thats just two of the bigger mistakes!

There are movies such as "The Tree Of Life" and "The Master" that while amazing from a technical standpoint, made me want to put a screwdriver into my eye sockets 1/3 of the way through.
"Mud" is on deck for today. I'm so-so on MM, but he has had some surprisingly good roles over the years. And some bad...
