'The Victors' - an often ignored 1960s WW2 film. It is a splendid film which concentrates on the impact of war on the individual rather than action and heroics. I saw it at an event to launch the re-issue of the novel upon which it was based: 'The Human Kind' by Alexander Baron.
Much to the author's eternal regret, the film took British characters and 'Americanised' them. This upset the author since his novel had effectively told stories he remembered from his own wartime service. Whilst I sympathise with the author's view, i believe it is to his credit that the film makers were able to do this without diluting the stories impact. It indicates that he had told a story that was international and could relate to anyone. If the characters had been German, Russian, British or American the story of the impact of war upon them would still have been relevant.
One of the best war films ever made. Fantastic novel.
If you have a genuine interest in WW2, and want to see an alternative to the faux-heroics of so many war films/novels, i recommend checking out both the film and the novel.

In this clip from The Jazz Singer is Warner Oland before he found fame as Charlie Chan.

That's unfortunate...

I once had a copy of Yankee Doodle Dandy on VHS that was colorized. If the movie's good enough I forget about it, but thankfully I found it on dvd later. :) In it's original black and white.

The Cotton Club from '84.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I might watch it again soon. It's about the famed night club in Harlem in its heyday, and the characters whose lives revolved around it. And then some.

The cast is spectacular. I guess it bombed when it came out, but it's well done and if you're into flicks about crime and the jazz era. Catch it.

Finally went to see "The Thing" last night. This is the prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter movie of the same name which happens to be my favorite movie of all time.
To say I have been skeptical of this one is an understatement.

All in all I'd have to say that it was good but certainly not great.
