Been on a Bond retrospective lately. Started with Dr No and have watched one per week courtesy of Love Film. Just about to enter the Roger Moore era having finished Diamonds are Forever last night.

Random thoughts so far.

1) The series gets pretty silly very early.
2) On Her Majesty's Secret Service was much better than I expected but Lazenby is rather wooden. Good plot though.
3) From Russia with Love is my favourite so far by a long way. The fight in the railway carriage is amazing.
4) Diamonds are Forever = Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. There was no need to send it up as it had already descended so far into self-parody. It was still fun though. Lots of wine might have helped with that judgement.
5) Bond should not wear a kilt. Ever.
6) They should remake OHMSS with Craig.
7) Seven films in and Bond has still worn a hat in every opening gun-barrel sequence.
8) I'm not entirely sure I'm looking forward to the run of seven Moore films but will stick with them.

Yes, OHMSS was quite a decent Bond film which just happened to have quite a rubbish Bond. Possibly my favourite Bond villain lair. Fro all the stick he gets, though, Lazenby wasn't the worst. Moore was a joke, IMO - and yes, he was Austin Powers before Austin Powers, really, far more so than Connery at his campiest. Dalton looked incredible after the Moore years... quite an achievement when you look back now and he's so ridiculous. I liked Brosnan, though the problem he faced was that he wasn't given much to work with: the films had totally descended into outright self-parody by then, and it was painfully obvious they didn't really much know what to do with Bond in a post-Cold War setting. Craig is good, though as we have discussed elsewhere he's far more Bourne than Bond. I still maintain that what they need to do is go back to Year Zero, and actually do all the books from Casino Royale up true to the books, as 1950s period pieces.

I really liked the Aviator. I think it really showed off Leo's acting skills too.

He has become a fine actor now he's aged past being typecast as the 'pretty boy'. A lot like Brad Pitt, from Fight Club onwards.

Am I to be shamed for life if I tell you that I haven't seen the original Stepford wives? :eeek:

Not at all. Worth seeing, though it's a lot less of a classic film than the frequency of the pop culture reference would make it seem, IMO.

Unkown Identity with Liam Neeson. A nice action-thriller for a short enjoyable evening. Some scenes and the story feeled like "seen before". Parts reminded me about Frantic, Bourne Identity and Mission Impossible to name a few. The mix was OK, the actors played well enough and I wasn't bored for a minute, but it's not a movie I would collect and watch more often. Seen once, and that's it.

They were never likely to remake their own movies but I agree that the reboot would have been great if they had gone back to the 1950s cold-war period but with new stories.

I watched Alfred Hitchcock's "Sabotage" last night for the first time. I really enjoyed it. Besides some good-looking British snap-brim hats, there were some great locations, and performances, notably from Sylvia Sidney. I wondered where I'd seen her before - just found out it was Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks!

Last year in Afghanistan I worked with a Canadian Special Forces Senior Enlisted who told me that a joint US/Canadian SF Unit did a recreation of this Devils Brigade assault, a few years ago using vintage equipment and weapons. He was one of the senior Canadians on the op. It was filmed for a documentary show. Might be worth some research on google.

To star, I'd prefer an unknown who can completely become Bond. Direction.... I'd like to see Tarantino, Scorsese, Peter Jackson (who I've decided to forgive for The Lovely Bones), and Burton all get a crack at it. For the writer.... any decent screen adaptor who can keep it true to the books.

It occurs to me it cold work as a big budget TV show as well, following the Mad Men mould. The stories could be compressed to an hour, maybe, at a push, ninety minute episodes.
