The last few days I've been watching a swell bunch of movies in the set, Icons of Screwball Comedy, Vol. 2

Theodora Goes Wild (1936)
Together Again (1944)
A Night to Remember (1942)
The Doctor Takes a Wife (1940)

A great set of movies with a cartoon, 'Mad Hatter' included.

Watched Andy Hardy Meets Debutante. Judy Garland guest stars in this one, and gets to sing a couple of numbers. Hardys go to NYC to straighten out some legal hoohah affecting the Carvel orphange. It's still pretty formulaic, but in this one Mickey Rooney shows how he's grown in his acting skills. There are two "reaction" shots that Mickey gets to do showing bafflement. The key here is that he doesn't mug or overact; rather, he uses his eyes and just a turn of the head.

Great series; how they kept the principals all together for years and years is impressive.

Yves St. Laurent: His Life and Times

It clocks in at 2:43:22, which is about 1:30:22 too long. The word that comes to mind to describe both the film and his most of his couture after 1961 is "wallowing."

Sounds like a great movie...

just finished watching Cover Girl. Have seen it a couple of times, and Phil Silvers overdone schtick was starting to get on my nerves enough towards considering throwing the DVD into the trash, IN SPITE of the wonderful 'Alter Ego' dance done by Gene Kelly...

Far superior screwball comedy to Bringing Up Baby IMHO
Grant has some great suits in this picture wish it were in color:)

Andy Hardy's Private Secretary. Sister Marion doesn't even show up in this one, her absence explained away in one line about her going to NYC.

Andy is in charge of almost every committee for his HS graduation, and he gets so caught up that he flunks Senior English, taught, ironically by his Aunt Millie. An obscure, never before used loop hole is invoked and AH gets to retake the final, passing this time.

Kathryn Grayson co-stars, and sings some opera. Ian Hunter is her widowed dad, and Tod Karnes, who'll be Jimmy Stewart's kid brother in It's a Wonderful Life, is Kathryn's brother.

For a graduation gift, Judge Hardy buys Andy a new car- don't know what make it is, but it's a convertable with an automaticlly raised and lowered roof and beautiful airstream lines. Judge Hardy must have been thrifty with his judge's salary.

Spending the weekend projecting new documentary films for a regional film festival. Last night's feature was "The Philosopher Kings," where upper-middle-class college kids discover that the school custodians actually have more to their lives than just pushing a broom. After the screening, as I was empting the trash bins, a patron came up to me and gushed "WOW! I bet you feel EMPOWERED after that film!" Sigh.
