What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Watched The Sting last night,,,,what a great movie, unbelievable Hat Show...

I agree it's a great movie, but it seems to me that the hats and wardrobes are slightly stylized/exaggerated/Hollywoodized rather than being period-accurate reproductions.

Joe Versus the Volcano (1990). When hypochondriac Joe Banks (Tom Hanks) learns that he has an incurable "brain cloud" and has five months to live, he accepts an offer to throw himself into a volcano on the island of Waponi Woo in order to save the island's inhabitants. Co-starring Meg Ryan (who plays three different roles) and a cast that includes Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Abe Vigoda, Dan Hedaya, Amanda Plummer, Ossie Davis, Nathan Lane, and Carol Kane, it's an odd, sometimes goofy comedy that succeeds mostly because of Tom Hanks' on-screen charisma. The humor is uneven, the cinematography has a bit of a dreamlike quality, and the movie ends with no real resolution (presumably because they ran out of gags). I like it, but it's not high on my list of favorite comedies and the only recommendation I can give is to watch it and decide for yourself.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Guy Ritchie's films are always a bit oddball, which I like. This one was no exception. It was really good and the costumes and music and sets were absolutely gorgeous. I feel as if I were missing out on some stuff because I've never seen the '60s show that it was based on, so now I may have to hunt a few episodes down and see.

I am hopeful that they make more.

The movie captures the lighthearted feel of the show, but the characters are different in important ways. Solo (film) is drawn as a sort of Alexander Mundy, i.e., a thief who is working off his sentence spying for the government; while Illya (film) is painted as this huge ferocious character with all sorts of issues. In contrast, the show gave Solo (TV) and Illya (TV) very little background, in passing, as it were. We learned Solo was in the Army in Korea, that Illya was a little boy in Kiev, that both went to college, and not a whole lot more. The creators' idea was that they would be mysterious figures, while the stories would focus on the "Innocent," the everyday person who's caught up in the adventure. But Solo & Illya proved too popular for that.

So, the movie is different in many ways: an origin story. If there is a sequel, and we get to see U.N.C.L.E. the organization headed by Grant's Waverly and with Solo and Illya as globetrotting agents, then maybe there will be a basis for detailed comparison. Glad you enjoyed it!

Far from the Madding Crowd

If you're a fan of the Poldark TV series, this might be for you. I liked it A LOT more than Poldark, but there you go.

The story is a 'vehicle' chase from A to B & then back again from B to A.................I think the movie is primarily aimed at young 'gamers' who are comfortable with fast moving images & repetition & for whom a storyline & characteriztion are without importance. It had little to do with the original MAD MAX films & those of a certain age who may be a litttle nostalgic for the 80's nihilism & Mel Gibson's youthful charm, were no doubt disappointed by this offering.
One has to ask what Tom Harding was doing in this movie, apart from money of course, he spent the first half of the film as a car ornament & the in the second half he was invisible, completely swamped by Charlize Theron, any actor could have played Max but the film should have been called 'Furious Furiosa, The Road To Nowhere''

I finally saw this the other night, and I have to agree. But then, I'm not a fan of the Mad Max franchise or most post-apocalyptic movies, so this movie really had nothing for me; I watched it primarily to see what all the fuss was about.

The thing that amazes me is this. On another forum I frequent that's comprised of movie fans, some of the members are condemning The Force Awakens for being a remake of A New Hope, but praising Mad Max: Fury Road for being an excellent continuation of the franchise without acknowledging it's a remake of The Road Warrior.

'Rango' ...........again; I've lost count how many times I've seeen it. It's just a great film. The CGI animation is superb I would even go as far to say artistically brilliant, the characters are likable & touching & it's fun to note the scenes from other movies, the Jurassic park toilet scene is a classic,
An 'animated' western which adults can enjoy........what's not to like.

Goldfinger. Now I'm watching From Russia with Love. Been at home feeling absolutely wretched all day long (I'm still in my pajamas!), but James Bond has a way of helping me feel better.

It's official M. Knight Sillyman is finished. Somehow I got talked into renting his last flick.... "The Visit" and it was the worst steaming pile of mule droppings I've seen in years. Has ever a "talent" fallen so far so fast and people are still giving him money to make film? Derivative, corny, slow, not scary and I figured out "the twist" halfway through the movie. Sigh... so sad.

We have watched SW Phantom Menace and SW Attack of the Clones, as we're catching our girls up to the story so we can take them to SWTFA.

I hadn't seen either since going to their theatrical releases. We bought the collection on bluray.

Conclusion:

While GL can't write romance to save his life, and isn't the greatest dialoguist generally) the films are nowhere near as bad as many people make them out to be. High art? No. The better of the two triplets? Hardly. But visually outstanding and good fun.

My girls even like Jar-Jar Binks - SO THERE!

Saw the Star Wars latest recently - it's pretty good. I prefer the Hunger Games films, but it's a much better film than ever Lucas had the ability to make himself, which is probably why he's so bitter about what the Mouse has done to his "children".

I enjoyed The Hateful Eight, though it's more one for the Tarrantino fans than the casual observer. Visually beautiful. Could probably be a little shorter (I gather he's no longer working with the editor who kept Reservoir Dogs so tight), but I enjoyed the story. I particularly enojyed the light and shade in the characters; I can't care about film characters who aren't somewhat flawed in some way. Trailer for TRumbo looks interesting, and I'm very keen to see the Revenant.

:lol: I never was a fan. Sixth Sense was nice (though The Others did it far better), but after that it was all rapidly downhill. He's a one-trick pony, and it's not even a particularly good trick.

Loved them as movies, but I never collected toys, had posters, etc. Clash of the Titans had more of an impact on my imagination. Nevertheless, that's quite a couple of sentences you've got there. I don't care for Lucas myself, but he made exceptional movies from the start. The new one better than Lucas's films??? C'mon.

I would agree that The Force Awakens is better than The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and maybe Return of the Jedi. And I am a Star Wars fan. Lucas swung for the fences with the Prequel Trilogy movies, but more often than not the leather either missed the wood entirely, or barely skimmed it. Just to be clear, I don't dislike the Prequel Trilogy movies, I just think they could have been better.

The first film - Star Wars - (I'll have none of this revisionist New Hope nonsense) was great, because there were other people around to rain him in. The other two he had little to do with. The best of them all was Empire, for which Lucas was rarely even on set. Those dreadful prequels were pure, untrammelled George Lucas getting everything exactly as he wanted.

Lucas has the occasional nice idea, but he can't write and he can't direct. Thx1138 was decent, but I'm pretty sure that was an accident. What he really needs are other peopke to flesh out his ideas and bring them to fruition. Strip the others away, and you get the Prequels. Those are Lucas, and the latest version is better by far. Lucas knows itcwill forevercbe bettercthan his Prequels, and he's clearly furious.
