What to do when a leather tote's color rubs off on clothing

Years ago, I bought my girlfriend a Tusting leather tote in rich brown. While she loves the bag, its color rubs off on her clothes and, overtime, she stopped using it because of this. Does anyone have any suggestion for what we could do to stop the color from coming off the bag? Is there a product we could buy to help, or perhaps a process we could do at home to fix the issue? Thank you in advance for any advice.

I don't know how leather responds to polyurethane - it may well present some breathing & maintenance( oiling) issues, and color change might be an issue too - but it would almost certainly prevent this particular problem by adding a thin layer of durable plastic coating. There may be a better choice made specifically for leather. I would take the bag to a good cobbler and ask.

Thank you - I agree it might work, but with the concerns that you mention, unless someone else comes up with an idea, we will, as you suggested, take it to a cobbler. And "Atlas Shrugged" is one of the two or three books I've read that has had an ongoing philosophical influence on my life. To be broader, I've read everything she has written and almost all of it has been influential.

"Atlas Shrugged" is one of the two or three books I've read that has had an ongoing philosophical influence on my life. To be broader, I've read everything she has written and almost all of it has been influential.

I recently asked the proprietor of a used bookstore if he had any copies of Atlas Shrugged. I had wanted to start giving them away to friends in need of philosophical stimulation.

He said that he could not keep them in stock and that even the new copies he had bought were sold out. He then said: "You don't need the book anyway, you are living it!"

I usually put a coat of neutral shoe polish on my shoes if I will wear light colored trousers. It works on shoes, it should work on that bag.

Even away from Mad Men, the book consistently pops up on "most influential" book lists all the time, which surprises me because I find most people I know either don't know it or haven't read it - so who are all these people it is influencing? And this is coming from an ardent supporter who wishes more people would read it. I think it is one of those books people like to say they have read.

Thank you. We did contact the maker and they told us that it should get better over time, which it hasn't, and they are sending us a cream that they said might help (which is nice as the bag was bought years ago and they didn't ask for any proof of sale, etc.).

That said, I think we are going to go with Saddle Lac which was suggested to us on another board as it appears that should directly address the problem. I'll report back after the Saddle Lac arrives and we try it out. What we really need is Hank Reardon to invent a tanning / dying process that never bleeds but is supple to the touch, but strong than, well, even his steel.

I pondered this for a bit and, then, realized you are right. I have talked to many people who rail against or simply denounce her, but not in the context of having read her books. The people who have read her books seem to be fans. I will now be questioning every Rand denouncer in detail to see if he / she has actually read Rand.

It's not an all or none, and I would apply the same standard to opinions on Rand, Marx or others: one should at least be familiar with some of a person's works before forming a full opinion - context and "what others say" should only take one so far. And the more resolute one's opinion is, on any philosophy, should hopefully be backed up by a study of the original source material. How this relates to my girlfriends tote bleeding onto her clothes I don't know

Me neither. I'd just leave Karl and Ayn out of this, I do have a problem with leather bleeding, though. Given that those two people are kind of dead, well, I guess they can't help. I'm buying myself some leather care stuff.

Based on a recommendation on another board, we ordered "Saddle Lac" and I will report back if it was effective once we've tried it. If you want to wait before you buy something, we will be the guinea pigs.

Finally, after much delay, we applied the suggested Saddle Lac to the leather tote and so far - for a few weeks - it has solved the problem and the tote hasn't bleed onto my girlfriend's clothes. While it hasn't stood the test of time, the early results are good. If things change, I'll report back. And thank you to everyone for your suggestions. Sincerely, FF
