We have good hatters here

If it's who I think it is.
That hatter came in telling us how he wore wool hats. Then talked of how he didn't know much about nutria and how it would make for a bad hat. He had the all beaver hats that don't shrink which then shrunk. He claimed to make hats better than vintage though they are not.
He may know alot, though he has alot to learn. More book smart than field smart. He talks about how he buffalos people into believing he knows his stuff and how it's all a sales technique then when you call him on the carpet and link to the page the page where he mentions this the page gets deleted. He'd state things as facts without knowing the truth.
The hatter I am talking about used to have a page up showing other online sellers how to entrench themselves and use psychological tactics to get the sale. I think I know who you are talking about.

His sales technique is "persistance wears down resistance" and in many cases it works.

Yea! I know that so called hatter. He said he made RayK a hat but when Ray sent it back because it was not what he ordered and he gets caught in one of his many many lies his excuse he was helping out another hatter since that hatter needed work??
Did Ray know this? Of course not! Funny thing when i called that hatter he was backed up 10 to 12 weeks.
I've always wondered if he ever made or makes his own hats.
He still makes posts on the net and then a few days/weeks later he delets them and yours also. Yea!!, he is a Master alright of BS.

We have Art and Steve here and if they aren't Master Hatters they sure are close imho. Plus they are both nice guys. :fedora:

Indeed, they are great guys and both make killer hats--I've never seen Steve's in person though, I admit, so I don't really know his hats. But they sure look good.

I think both Art and Steve would be the first to admit that they know enough as hatters to know that there is so much more to learn for others to refer to them as master hatters. And we however are lucky enough to be a part of both of them building their businesses and reputations as fine hatters. We benefit from their fine hats and reasonable prices as well. But...Truly the more one learns, the more he realizes he doesn't know. And when the boasting begins, as Robert rightly mentioned, that's when you know the illusions of grandeur are setting in. And Art and Steve are about as far from that as it comes...except when Steve starts talking about beaver felts! :p

Having said that, with my limited but not so inexperieinced hat experiences, I have never seen the kind of creativity and craftsmanship that Trent Johnson brings to a hat. It is another level altogether than most of the fedoras I've seen. Look at all the work in that hat and box and portfolio to the President! Holy buddha. We all need to aspire to that level of finery and craftsmanship if we are to be in the ranks of the masters of any craft.

business is business

So, if business is business then a contract is worth about as much as the paper it is written on?

Hi Robert, my point is business is not about contracts, it's about relationships. You need to build them to get what you want--when the contracts are brought up in conversation, the end of the business relationship is often near. I have no idea if TJ has a real contract or not with BB. But if you are intent on figuring out the truth or developing a blocking relationship with TJ, my advice to you is: 1) first visit and buy a nice hat(even one of the stock hats in the shop), 2) develop a relationship by talking about the hat he is building for you, 3) then find areas of common business interest to both of you. Like any businessman, what are you offering HIM? He doesn't need the blocking fees and he doesn't need the experieince with the hats. What does he get out of blocking your hats? And how is that related to his moving forward with his felt hat business?

Answer those, and you may be able to develop a value proposition. That, my brother, is the game of business. theguy in Florida? I have no idea, but I will bet he has a strong value proposition or another business or personal relationship-based reason.

No, don't need nor want a contract...just needed a hat blocked a year or two ago and was told he blocked for an associate in Florida...and the rest is history.

PanamaBob,

I spoke to Joe a few months back and Trent isn't blocking his hats anymore. His Panama hats are blocked by him now if they don't come blocked. :cool2:

Thanks G, you are so very right. Guy's I have to admit that I love the praise but truly don't feel qualified to accept any title with the word "Master" in it unless it refers to what I have done all my life, namely Masonry. I won't speak for Steve but knowing him I believe he would also squirm in his seat at the gesture. I know this is being done with affection and respect but please don't, I just can't take the pressure!! I would be more comfortable with everyone knowing that I always do the best I can given the knowledge base that I have, but certainly NOT a master. "Master" implies WAY more than I bring to the table.

Happy New Year from your humble servant.
