What kind of hat is this? Wide brimmed natural woven fibers.

As a fair skinned bald guy, I'm always looking for a good wide brimmed summer sun hat. I found this handsome devil at the thrift store, and I'm curious if this is a known style. I'm fairly confident it is a men's hat - mostly because it fits on my giant melon - but I'd be comfortable wearing it in any case.

It appears to be very sturdy, and is woven from stout natural cord. The round brim measures a little over 16.5" front to back. The chin strap is heavy waxed cotton lacing with a decorative knot. It is unlined, but I plan on sewing a 3"x 9" piece of soft leather into the brow area to make it a little more comfortable.

You win!

I was thinking South America. Your tip sent me off looking at Africa, and I think I've figured it out. It's probably a Bolga sun hat (elephant grass). Most seem to come from Ghana.

Thanks!
