What kind of hat goes with a western shirt?

Hello gentlemen,

I am posting this question for my significant other, who finds himself in an utter dilemma: he wears western shirts (from plain plaid ones to heavily embroidered kinds), and would like to wear a hat with them other than a stetson cowboy hat.

Any advice? Both of us are a bit new to the whole mens hat thing, so please also enlighten us about absolute hat / gear combination faux-pas. Your help is greatly appreciated!

How about a Stetson fedora? An "Open Road" would certainly do the trick. This would be my first choice.

Another choice would be the "Indy" style hats, most notably among these, the Adventurebilt Hat by our own "Fedora." I am wearing one of these in my avatar. If you are worried about the "Indiana Jones" associations, then go for gray. I have a beautiful gray Adventurebilt.

I think that an "Indy" hat would be perfect with a western shirt. It's a dress hat with an adventurer twist to it. There are many good ones to choose from, among which the Adventurebuilt-brown or grey, Herbert Johnson-brown, and Akubra Federation-brown, grey, sand and black.

I too like the cut and fit of a western shirts - mostly monochromatic ones for me. Just about any Akubra would work well with a western shirt. Some of their hats are more "cowboy" and others are more "outdoor." The Open Road Stetson type hat would be an excellent choice. After almost diappearing here in the South, it's now come back strong thanks mostly to the Rockabilly crowd. An Indy hat would also be a great choice. It's got a tall crown and wide brim like a cowboy hat without being a cowboy hat. What ever you decide on, wear it boldly!

Here is a pic that I had posted elsewhere but I think it applys here as well.

It is a Open Road like hat by Miller Hats called the Westside Hat

It would look great with the cattleman bash with the front brim snapped down or with the traditional fedora style bash.

Here is a pic of my Open Road:

Thank you all for the great tips. Seems like we have to order hats from the States, because around here it is not that easy to come by a good lid these days. Especially since I have no idea what these styles translate into German... :cool2: (this smiley looks like Anton aus Tirol, jawohl!)

I see a couple of possibilities here. The hats posted above are absolutly great. Especially for Dress "Sunday-go-ta-meetin" occasions. I would add that if it is for everyday wear (as in rather than a baseball cap, going to work in the yard, kick up your feet on the front porch, have a BBQ kinda hat) Then nearly any fedora with some real wear on it would work.

A good example can be found in the thread on Neil Young. That hat has lived and would fit with everyday western shirts.

How does an American Western shirt go over in Switzerland? It must be a distinctive style. I salute your boyfriend. Good job.:)

Look no further than the classic Stetson Open Road. It has been the western-style gentleman's hat for many decades. And the older ones have incredibly soft, comfortable felt.
