How are you liking the 888s?

Only had them six months so half broken in (with light wear) One soak, two hand washes and a hot machine (for shrinkage) No Spin. They tend to have a bit of a flying / jodper bump at the top of the thighs which slowly drops out.

Different game to the 634 21oz, higher rise which I prefer and a slight taper from the knee. The 25 is great! (Yes it takes some investment).

I tried 777 and not for me. Too restricting in all the wrong places, but that's just me.

Both the 634 and the 888 are terrific! Might try the super super black at some point.

Hi guys. Just a quick question about pocket depth. Any makers out there with bigger front pockets? I have some Brave stars and I just stuck an opened tape measure in the front pocket. I get 7" deep on both my pairs. I wish they were a little bigger. I am really tempted to bite the bullet and step up my raw denim game. Kinda curious about the Iron Hearts? And some of the other brands out there?
Iron Hearts have 'properly made' square bottomed pockets that seem slightly deeper because of their sensible shape, but they're quite shallow for me. IH 888'd have a one inch deeper pocket, which interestingly (to me) came about very shortly after I kept on asking for it on the IH forums.

Edit: I agree with the person that said the IH jeans pockets aren't typically very deep- I remember with my 1955S that when I went to do my boots up I had to empty the pockets first, because the shallow pockets prevented me from leaning forward with an iPhone 6 in there- and nowadays phones are even larger!!

Levi's Premium jeans also have square cut pockets, which makes for a better fit for square or rectangular items like your wallet and phone. They seem deeper than regular IH jeans.

If you thumbs don't bleed for the first month doing that button up you have the wrong fit......
I remember not being able to do up the top button of mine for the first week, and then for a while I had to stick my thumb into my shirt or t shirt to get a few layers of fabric between me and the button. I remember reading that the 23oz are even nastier than the 25oz (not tried the 25s).

I love the construction quality of the IH jeans, and the standard 21oz fabric is an absolute winner. When the 888's came out I was pleased because I have muscular legs. A few issues made them less than perfect for me, though:
  • So stiff and thick that mobility becomes an issue, for example when getting into a car.
  • A front rise/rear rise difference needs to be greater for those of us with a muscular butt. I can't pull them up high in the rear so I'm left with extra fabric in the front.
  • The angle of the spread of the legs is greater than other brands- maybe it needs to be because of the heavier fabric- but again this leaves extra fabric at the crotch, because a man's hips are not THAT wide. Only way to improve this is to stuff your pockets full.
  • The extra fabric in the crotch gives a 'diaper effect'.
  • The taper from crotch to knee is quite drastic, leaving it too tight in my thigh and across the knee. 'Muscle' jeans typically taper more from mid-thigh down, and aren't so slim on the knee, with taper still occurring below the knee.
I'll be sticking with my 541's forever, though I wish I could get hold of more of the Premium Line without a trip to the States.

Crotch flair aside, I suspect the 888's are an excellent fit for the regular shaped man. Jeans with taper look tidier and more modern on medium to large sized men.

Thanks @Rich22, I am starting to go down the raw denim rabbit hole. lol. I only have experience with Brave Star so far. They have been fun so far, my only gripe is the rather shallow front pockets. They are 7" deep and my S21 phone barely fits, I wish I had a little more room.

I like jeans with bigger thighs. No skinny jeans here. I have bigger legs from when I USED to work out and a bigger gut from eating junk food. lol. I am really tempted by the IH 634's. The price keeps scaring me away because I am not sure they will fit.

I also need bigger front pockets because I like to pocket (lazy) carry. I need extra room and bigger pockets so I don't print as much.

I am a complete noob in the raw denim game. I am looking to pick up a new pair of heavyweight (21oz or so) jeans for this winter.

If you ever go to Japan you can snag the IH 634's for about 45% of their Western price. Or at least you could, when I did it. The money I spent on the 888S UHR was silly. I think I over the last 12 years I spent £100 on the IH634's in Japan, £190 on the 1995S in Thailand, and maybe £400 on the 888UHR in England. It was only when I started paying close attention to the dimensions of clothes that I learnt what does and doesn't work for me. If I could get Levi's 541's in IH 21oz fabric I'd say that would be worth £200 to me. I'll never spend over £250 on jeans again. Affording it and justifying it are different things, particularly when £50 (or $35 if I was in America) jeans do the job, fit better and look better.

  • Selvedge is just a gimmick in itself, but is indicative of quality fabric. Sometimes fit is slightly compromised to allow for the selvedge to be incorporated (eg making the outside leg perfectly straight.)
  • RAW jeans are a pain in the ass at first but fade nicely. 'One washed' or sanferised jeans are a sensible choice.
  • Lined rear pockets are nice but it's not essential.
  • Premium jeans tend to have more pleasant inner thigh and crotch stitching- usually you'll see a single visible line of thread on the exterior inner leg as opposed to two. (can't recall the technical name of this). I find I get less chafing with this.
  • Rear pockets with an internal stud AND over stitching are much nicer than standard sloppy stitching. It keeps the edges smooth and flush.
Edit: I might have a look for the technical names of the things I mentioned above later today, as it frustrates me they didn't spring to mind! Haha

Jeans are just like jackets. Once you know your numbers 85% of the risk is taken out. In the denim game the $250 mark is easy to hit. Ih are a little more. I think IH service and resources sort of make up for the pricing. Don’t get me wrong, more than $75 for jeans is a little nuts but so are $1,000 jackets.

£400 is $550, so quite a lot more than $250. If they sold them for the same price in Japan I wouldn't begrudge it the same, but they don't, and things like that irk me.

Does a $550 pair of jeans compare reasonably to a $1000 dollar leather jacket? I would have thought the raw materials for the leather jacket cost vastly more, and take at least 4x as long to build. What do our experts think?

Ih jeans aren’t $500 in the US. 14oz for an apples to apples comparison are $320. So are they worth an extra $70? The detailed measurements, free 2 day shipping, prompt reply to inquiries, and easy returns make it worth it to me. Ymmv
I also like Rogue territory, 3 sixteen, left field nyc, freenote, imogene and willie. I think a GREAT bang for the buck is Naked and Famous

Some pairs are 550 USD (if you include tax, which we always do in the UK).

I've tried a few different companies, and I'd be willing to try more if any fit like 541's.

I think we got our wires crossed, as I never compared IH to $250 jeans. :)

I got myself a present. One pair of "the Swiss Jeans Freak" birthday jeans.

Ruedi Karrer, the "Swiss Jeans Freak" runs the Jeans Museum in Zürich. From their homepage: "The Jeans Museum in Zurich is the world’s only brand-independent museum for heavily faded denim. It is currently home to over 14.000 jeans and denim jackets. All naturally faded. The Jeans Museum was founded by Ruedi Karrer, also known as the Swiss Jeans Freak. Ruedi was born in the Swiss Alps in 1959. He fell in love with denim in 1973 when his family received two pairs of Levi’s jeans in a clothing donation parcel."
Homepage: The Jeans Museum

The Jeans (also from the homepage):
"On September 8, 2019, Ruedi turned 60 years old. To celebrate this milestone and realise a life-long dream, he partnered with Candiani Denim and IMjiT35020 to create 60 pairs of completely custom-made jeans."

As I live near Zurich, I donated several old, well worn jeans to the museum. So I wondered what his own jeans would be.

It's a high rise, straight cut jeans. I look forward to break it in!

Very nice dude, despite sandals on socks. :D Even with all marketing bs he has to deal with now - Which is perfectly fine, of course - he never differentiates between arguably less known brands vs. pricey, overhyped ones.
I cannot but respect a dude who says right away that his favorite jeans are by G-star. And he often mentions Rifle jeans, which I too grew up wearing. You can't imagine my shock after I first saw Levi's jeans in the late 90's once it became readily available. It felt infinitely inferior compared to tank-like Rifle denim.

In any case, these are really nice.

cool jeans congrats!

I think that guy has a hoarding problem. how unique a raw jeans can be that you would need ten of thousands of samples of jeans the actual wornout pants, preferably unwashed... from around the world :confused: it's hard to call it a museum when the pants are in stacks and in boxes probably never have the time to categorized and cataloque them at all since he hikes mountains all the time.

He is a really nice guy - in case of style he is just interested in denim :)
If you text him on IG or email for advice he is very helpful and gives hints for denim in all price ranges.
