Haha you noticed. Simply out of convenience. The belt right now is too stiff to bend and then go through the buckle so I started skipping it until the leather softens enough it can bend fast enough for easy operation.

That seems to make sense based on my limited exposure to this topic also. I think I've read that's about when Vanson stopped using horsehide. Can't remember where I read that, somewhere on this forum.

No idea. Although, oddly enough, they still use it for the Japanese market, just not the same one. They working with some glossy stuff.

If only there was a way to find more jackets like this in all of our sizes. Or at least in a 42! Just wow!! I had always thought the good Vanson CW disappeared with the Talon zip era. This jacket shows how wrong I was.

@Peter Mackin Did you do anything special to that jacket to achieve that? Crumple it up a lot, any treatments? Did it start out lifeless and plasticky, or was it soft from the beginning?

No it's been like this from the start,I've had it for 12/13 years and it's hardly been used.although I fkd up the zip trying to make it less prone to wear.i have a genuine vanson replacement zip that I will have fitted when needed.

I might have worn this jacket a dozen times in total,,sold all my ffqh and steerhide jackets because of how good these hides are.

According to that post, about 2,000-3,000 jackets a year, supposedly sequential serial numbering with no code in the numbering as to year produced. I have 2 at home with known production dates, I'll add those to this thread when I get home, for info sake if it helps anything.

I find that hide truly amazing, and I doubt I'm the only one. Would be nice to have a thread with that pic posted, anyone with similar Vanson hides could chime in. Somehow it may help determine how rare or available that might be in a used jacket for those of us who really want it. All I can do is dream at this point lol.
