You're absolutely right about the length. My khakis and flannels I've had hemmed at about half an inch above my shoes, but the jeans I just roll up to whatever I feel like that day. As you say, "To each his own." A funny sort of situation developed in my department last year, though. We had a temporary chairman who was in his fifties, was about 5'5", and had a huge beer-gut. His big thing was that he was an ex-hippie (he didn't know who Robert Crumb was, though), and he refused to wear anything but tight t-shirts and skinny jeans. He always reminded me of some kind of weird little Christmas elf. Skinny jeans on guys over fifty?I think though you have to be careful with the leg length in the sense that is better to have them on the short side and allow no break at all. Otherwise I find they ruin the look of every shoe/boot you wear. Baggy and slightly too long and you definitely risk to look like a grandpa in my opinion.
To each his own but I think that a mid rise with a moderately tapered leg is the way to go for most people.
