What Jacket Are You Wearing Today?

I like Wisconsin weather...in Wisconsin. Not so much in North Carolina. We dropped below zero last night. Too cold for old heat pumps...and too cold for old Rebels.

But there’s a silver lining. I get to wear vintage jackets that, otherwise, seldom leave the closet. Like this late 1952 (I think) Reed N-3A. These old “A” jackets were really built for cold weather. I’ve got a couple of N-3Bs, and I believe there’s more insulation in this Reed than in both the B jackets, combined. And there just isn’t a vintage color like high-altitude aged, Air Force Blue!

BTW...you can bearly see the 1940s Crown main zipper. Probably the smoothest operating zipper I own.

Good Gawd, Almighty! The sun is out. The wind has calmed. The temperature is above freezing. And the heat pump has stopped running...at least for a few minutes.

I’m shedding layers like a springtime blue crab. Down to a vintage Woolrich shirt over a cotton t-shirt. The hat is my old Stetson that’s tagged “Playboy”...but looks much more like a Stratoliner.

Looks good. Question, with just a short sleeve shirt, isn't it a bit itchy?

Same experience here. I am not sure if they (still offer) the 2 different fits for this jacket - regular/fuller fit called Alaska fit and the slimmer fit called Seattle fit. In either case, it's a jacket that would be somewhat limited if it did not allow for proper layering. I have bought many Filson items over the years - and like mostly all of them and have read and posted many reviews. What I find astonishing is when some reviewers say this jacket - or even the double mackinaw (which I have also) is the warmest jacket ever. Maybe they have a faster metabolism than I do, or a better tolerance for very cold weather, whadda I know?
Bottom line for me, when it gets in the single digits - with wind chills taking it down into the negatives, wool jackets usually require too much layering to be comfortable and warm. When it gets into those temps - and colder, the B3 shearling lined jacket or my 15y/o Duluth Trading Company down parka are what I am reaching for.

I concur. I've 2 Filson Mac's and one double mac. They're fine for 20's and 30's and if you're going to walking any distance but for standing still they're not that great. I had one on the other night and it was single digits, it did NOT doo well. I've learned that for weather like we've had the last 2 weeks shearling and parka's are the way to go.

Ha ha glad you enjoyed the post. My label doesn't look like that. Nothing so fancy. I just says "Ginos" on it. Weird. I got it used off the bay so I doubt it's anything that special probably just a '70's "Marlboro Man" knock-off but it's cheap and warm.

Not really enough to bother me. The other option is to wear a long sleeve T or a mock turtle neck under my wool shirts, but that tends to be a little too bulky in the arms if I wear a jacket. I like to wear layers in cold weather. It’s a trick my Wisconsin family taught me. But I try to wear more layers around my core while leaving my extremities free to move, if possible. This often means wearing short sleeve undershirts and fleece or wool vests along with my wool shirts and jackets.

Yep, and double mack is fairly short and loose fitting so unless the temps are very moderate or you layer with a sweater, cold air is everywhere. The packer coat (my avatar) is longer and closer fitting and that huge shearing collar when buttoned up keeps your face and ears protected, but unless worn with good layering allows the wind to get through.

But the two jackets that have absolutely sustained me during this brutal...almost unprecedented...cold snap are neither vintage or expensive. On the left, a late-seventies, well-worn (Read: beaten to hell) N-3B. On the right, a new, “Deal of The Day”, ATF N-1.

Finally up to "bearable" temperatures in Iowa so giving a few better fit/slight break in progress shot of the J23 from Lost Worlds. This thing is a beast, a horse's saddle to wear on your back. It's good that I didn't specify it any tighter. Having a good sunny day at around 20F/-6.5C is a treat after the weather I've been in for the past 2 weeks.

I have a serious thing for all type of D-Pocket. That thing looks and fits great.
