How does Aero's Jerky hide handle the rain? I'm not looking to employ a leather jacket as my go-to rain coat, but I figure if dropping that kind of cash on a piece of outerwear, I shouldn't worry about getting soaked through if caught out in a sudden storm [cue Seinfeld suede jacket episode].

Only ask as I recall rain being an issue with Vicenza, though I could be mistaken?

I would say jerky is less spongy than vicenza in the rain, and seems to be a bit more water repellent, but my experience is limited to getting caught in light rain. Nothing compared to a memorable summer storm that soaked my vicenza Dustbowl. After that, it never recovered its initial suppleness.

I know it's a vegetable tanned leather

Are you sure about this? It feels very different from any other vegetable tanned leather I’ve handled. Veg tanned you can tell straight away as it’s got a certain stiffness to it and the creases are easy to set. Jerky is super soft and doesn’t have much “memory” if that makes sense. I thought it was chrome tanned.

That's what I heard. But interesting you should describe it that way, same what I've always heard people talk about Jerky and it couldn't be any more different from my experience with this leather. Both jackets in Jerky that I've handled (and one that I have) are stiffer than CXL, heavy and sets in deep creases, albeit after a lot more wear. I find it generally as tough as CXL even though it is a bit lighter. I know Aero refers to it as mid-weight alternative to CX but I personally would never call it that.

I don't want to dampen you peoples enthusiasm about jerky horsehide but Aero changed that hide like a year ago so there's a good chance all the jackets you have seen are made of the older stuff and give no clues about their recent new jerky horsehide.

Denny told me this year they've received the best batch of Jerky so far though yeah, that doesn't have to mean anything at all but that's what I'm sayin' that all the jackets I personally have seen in Jerky have been fantastic. Same as some on the photos don't look spectacular at all. It's a strange hide but the jacket I got in it is the nicest I have.

The sleeves are entirely too long. They should finish 1” past the elbow.

Yep, now that you say this I remember my jacket (October ‘19) was supposedly made out of the new stuff, which I was told was made to show wear faster. It’s a nice HH and I personally prefer it to CXL. Not lightweight at all but super easy wearing. I just can’t see how it can be vegetable tanned as it displays very different properties. Maybe the older version was.
