Skyhawk,
What a cool idea for a thread!
I'm a size 46 in vintage and military jackets and I sometimes wish I was a little smaller so that I could fit into the more common sizes in vintage flight jackets and peacoats.

Thanks! Being a size 40, I find quite a few vintage jackets in my size and I'm thankful for that. I am interested to see if more medium to small sized people are into vintage jackets because of availability factor. So far though the sizes seem pretty even.

It’s kind of a hard question to answer cause it depends on make and model. I’m either a 36 or 38. I went with 38 to be safe ha.

I'm a size 38 in my Aero B6 jacket, but I wear a size 40 in my Aero Premier Half Belt. My usual size is 48 M (38US) for most of my jackets.

I find it really depends on the brand and style of jacket. It can even depend from jacket to jacket for me. A large to a double XL will all fit on the same body. My torso is tall and my shoulders are broad so finding a jacket that doesn't stop at my navel, or pinch in the shoulders is a real task. Most jackets I find are too short in the body and way too long in the arms. And wearing a wool anything, particularly a mackinaw is just impossible because the nature of wool doesn't let the shoulders stretch.

Yes, as has been well established on here for years, size is almost meaningless - it's the measurements that matter. I need a 38 (Aero Highwayman) or a 46 (Brooks CR) depending on the make, cut and era. I'm generally a 44 in vintage patterns and a 40 in modern cuts.

Tag size is almost irrelevant to me these days...I strictly go by the #'s 24' p2p, 26-27" back and sleeve length, 19.5-20.5" across shoulders. I've had many jackets with these numbers with a tag size of 40" all the way up to 46"!
For vintage M/C stuff I'd say 44" to 46".

If the measurements are precise, I would be between 42 and 44. But as everyone is saying sizes vary a lot

Usually look for a 42 or 44 but i measure the darn thing. P2P 23-24 / S2S 19-20 / sleeve/length 25.5-26.5. If I want to layer, I up the pit and shoulder measurements a bit.

I fit pretty good in this recent Steele and Jones Last Crusade jacket which was custom tailored. its a size 36r, but I could also fit in a 38R depending upon the manufacturer.

Generally a 40 long A-2 repro, 42 original... M422a size 40. G-1s all over the damn place.
5'10, 39.5" chest with orang-utan arms.

Thanks to you all for voting! Looks like the medium to small guys are winning on the FL. At this point there is nearly 2x as many votes for 38-40 than any other sizes. Could it be that the availability of smaller vintage clothing is driving this number? Hard to say but very interesting.

I have wondered about this as well ever since I got into the jacket scene. I suppose I am lucky that I'm not a size 40 or 42 because if I were then I would be overwhelmed with tempting jackets, new and old, in my size.

That’s interesting. I’m a small guy (38 is normally my size) and find that used and vintage is normally available in much bigger quantities in size L and XL.

I don’t know if it’s some sort of distortion that we feel like there aren’t enough jackets for us and we are missing out something by not trying or owning a certain model:)
