I love the old comedy-variety shows, like Jack Benny, Burns and Allen and Fred Allen. But mysteries are a close second. Anyone here ever listen to "When Radio Was"?
I listen to a lot of 1930s variety material -- especially Rudy Vallee's Fleischmann's Yeast/Royal Gelatin Hour. A whos-who of popular entertainment in the Era, including many performers who never appeared on any other radio program. I'm also partial to fifteen-minute comedy serials, probably the hardest radio format to write and perform consistently well. I'll also listen to anything Fred Allen ever did, anytime, any place, any where, but I think he did his peak work between 1935 and 1938.
I'm quite partial to Fiber McGee and Molly. The shadow has always been one my favorites. Does anyone remember "The Whistler"? Another interesting one if you like on going serials. Is "Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. The insurance investigator with the action packed expense account". I think I phrased that right. That show was on until the final night of network radio broadcasting in 1962. Of course I still catch "The Grand Ole Opry" on WSM 650 am Nashville, Tenn. Saturday night. It's the longest running program in the history of broadcasting. It's been on since 1925.
Don't mean to get carried away but I can go on for hours.
