Last night, in the pouring rain, my car struck a pothole and blew out the tyre. The stress, the repair and all that went with it left me drained, but also in admiration of the work of the unsung heroes like the call centre staff, the traffic police and the repair fitter, all of whom were so sympathetic and considerate. And to my missus too, who when she received my call became agitated but quickly calmed down when I confirmed that all was well. It's all over now, apart from picking up the tab. I'll worry about that another time. Tonight Glenrothes soothes the pain of the memory, so it's purely medicinal of course. Here's to all those unsung heroes. Your very good health.

I need a drink to assuage my disappointment......My favourite drink of late is a Benromach 10 year old. It was one of our favourite distilleries to visit....(just outside Elgin) I only brought one bottle home with me and was thrilled to discover last month the local gov't liquor store carried it. I emptied that bottle last night and went to replentish this morning.......but alas, it is now sold out and it was a one time purchase so I am SOL for now.

Most of our spirits are sold through government controlled liquor stores. They import and retail. There are but a few private liquor stores but none that really focus on whisky...they stock the popular mass preferred items. So if the gov't store does not have it....generally I am out of luck. Once the border opens I can shop the many US whisky online retailers and have it shipped to my US border address. I think I will pick up a Glenfarclas 17 as something to entertain my disappointment for now.

Already buying a pack of cigarettes has been an expensive adventure in Vancouver.
This governmental booze shop system appears to be pretty similar to upper Scandinavia.

Is that all over the country or only in some states like BC?
I remember folks have been much more relaxed in such respect in Quebec or Ontario for example.

Liquor is a provincial responsibility so it varies by province. The pricing varies as well depending on the level of gouging they wish maintain. We do have private liquor stores but very few if any that specialize in higher quality offerings...most offer just later opening hours once in while 'specials'. They have served to force the gov't stores to become more service oriented, less surely clerks so it has an upside.

This little Highlander tonight, smoked liquid Marzipan. Real heavily peated, on par with Islays like Ardbeg 5/10 or several Kilchomans, just not as antiseptic but more mineral, taliskeresque.

On June 27th 2018, the EU imposed a 25% tariff on American whiskeys & bourbons. Has the UK repealed that tariff meaning that Dr. j. Daniels fine medicine will become cheaper in the UK? I've tried to find out but the search engines keep taking me to the suspension of tariffs that you posted about.

Yours is a great question. And you are right, I could not easily find a straight answer. Then I stumbled upon this. It's from December 2020. Perhaps it is already out of date.

In actuality most of the original tariff increase will be absorbed & kept as a permanent increase here in the US. But it may appear that we are getting something. We will actually be paying more & getting less since the 700ml bottle was legalized at the end of Dec 2020. We will soon be paying a little less, but getting 700ml instead of 750ml.
