I have Dubonnet, but with my pale complexion, I tend to look like a vampire, so I have to lighten it up a bit with another color. I think I might take a look at Hang Up though :)

Hang up is deeper and cooler in tone. I'm medium olive...I think, well I wear Amber 300 in L'oreal Infallible foundation so if that's much too dark for your complexion you may think Hang Up is too dark for day wear if you don't like a deep lip. I've always found deeper shades easier to wear for day time than brighter shades when it comes to red lipsticks.

I suppose you could apply a coat of vaseline or a shiny lipbalm underneath Hang Up (or Dubonnet for that matter) for a sheerer coverage and lighter color.

Gorgeous color, but you're right, it is darker.

I think I'll try Dubonnet as you suggested, with lip balm.

Thank you!

Tarte

Just wanted to chime in on the lipstain part of this thread -

I've been trying the Tarte lipstain lately in Fiery matte. I was hoping this would be a nice toned down red for days I don't want to go full on vintage. But I'm a bit underwhelmed. The colors are nice and it does deliver on its moisturizing claims. But the thickness of the stick is awkward in application. And the consistency is not quite a stain and not quite a lipstick. It only stains lightly and I can definitely wipe it off, which to me negates the "stain" part. I'm gonna keep it just because it works in a pinch, but I probably won't be buying it again.

Hooray, found a neat lipstain - "Just Bitten" in Gothic (dang, was that Maybelline?? Can't remember the brand, silly git - next day edit: the brand is Revlon), a dark red. Its a smidge too blue for me, but this stuff stays on until I practically sand it off (Ponds cold cream with corn meal)! lol The balm is pretty good, only have to re-apply after the usual eating and drinking (darn my new coffee addiction!). And my lips don't look like they're about to flake/crack and fall off at the end of the day. :) Gonna try the lighter, fire-engine red shade to see if that's better then Gothic...I'll let y'all know how it works out.

Fantastic & educational thread, ladies, thank you all for your posts!

I also purchased a lipstain. I think it was Cranberry Crush, by Maybelline. I've liked it so far, and am exited to get different shades in the future. Although I love lipstick, lipstain seems to work better with my everyday life.

I love the Just Bitten line. I've got Gothic and Frenzy so far. I do prefer the frenzy color though over Gothic. Its more of a bright raspberry color and goes beautifully with my tone. I can't wait to try the others! Also, i wore it last night for a party and it did not come off even after eating and drinking. Yay!

I have that nail polish on my toes and finger nails :)

For lipstick I wear Cherries in the snow with Rose Wine on top to tone down the pink.

I saw that the other day but didn't buy it cause I thought I saw a bit of sparkle to it. Was that just my eyes playing tricks? I like the matte look which is why I didn't get it.

Which one? The Cherries in the Snow and Rose Wine do not, but I think there's a bit of sparkle to Fire & Ice. Although it's not enough in the nail polish to make a difference.

WIth the Fire and Ice I seen on a youtube video that the girl described it as a technacolor red (very bright) is that true? Does it have an orange cast to it?

I just bought it yesterday, and haven' worn it all day but put it on in the evening to test it and it is definitely brighter than any other red I own and does look a tad orange on me. It's almost a coral type red on me.

it definetely has some orange/coral in it. When I have worn it these last few times ago, I thought that very thing when I looked in the mirror.

I'm new to the forums and saw this thread and just had to post.

I made it my mission months and months ago to find a PROPER red lipstick, and a fully matte one at that! Trying to find such a thing seems to be harder nowadays than I thought so when I found one and fell in love, I bought multiple tubes.

It's by Revlon and called Revlon Matte in Really Red. I wear it almost everyday and it has never let me down. I'm naturally a very pale and peachy sort of complexion so red's definately stand out. But this one is different! It just doesn't quit. It lasts all day long and I find most days I'm only having to reapply maybe 3 or 4 times in my entire 8 hour shift.

I just can't praise this stuff enough. I absolutely love the matte look and that alone makes this lipstick a true treasure.

I just got MAC Russian Red and I love it. Although it did bleed just a tick, which I didn't think it would being so matte. I also got a new lip paint type one from Rimmel. It is Lasting Finish Kiss and Stay in Cherry Blossom 080. It is great, a nice bright (but not too bright neon or anything) cherry/tomato red. It wears really well (eating and drinking) and is very inexpensive. I was thinking about dropping a bunch of cash on one of the Lipsense semi-permanent ones, but I had points to redeem at my local drug store, so I picked up the Rimmel. I don't think I need to bother with the Lipsense, I am pretty happy with this one.
