I came across this image in a knitting pattern book and cannot for the life of me work out what the man has attached to his lapel. Anyone know?

he won the sweatervest award at the county fair.

is there more to the picture, or anything else like it in the pattern book, stuff to give context?

No, that's all there is to the image and the pattern just refers to the waistcoat (and her outfit). [huh]

i'd agree an award or sporting adornment. there's also a dark ribbon, behind the white. team colors are generally dual, correct?

I thought that was a shadow but yes, you're right, it is a dark ribbon. As to dual colours, I have no idea. :(

I'd have to agree on the sport colors. Over here we have fight ribbons: in school you buy these things for like a buck and they're decorated ribbons you pin to your shirt or jacket to show school spirit. Maybe these are the forerunners of that tradition.

Really? I've never seen anything like that - perhaps we don't have that kind of thing here. Thanks for the insight, everyone - I knew there'd be someone here that would have an idea at the very least. :D

Guess

The man's lapel ribbon is either academic/fraternal; or athletic/sport
adornment. With a collegiate campus background most likely.
I haven't seen a long ribbon such as this since childhood.

Shame he's absconded then. [huh]

Harp - the closest I've ever seen to anything like this are rosettes, such as one would wear for election campaigns or win at dog shows, gymkhanas etc.

I do not know about the ribbon, but I think his braces (supenders to you US chaps) are broken, I mean, why else would he have his hands in his pockets?
