What is the best way to store leather jackets?

I was going to turn left at Albuquerque.

Moving to an island in the tropics and need to put my jackets in long term storage. I was thinking of wrapping each individually in a garbage bag, and then stacking them flat in a large plastic tub. What do you all recommend?

I wouldn't stack too many of them for too long.
Since running out of space i have had to resort to stacking, and i have noticed that if i stack more than 2 or 3 on top of each other the weight of the top ones ends up forming creases on the bottom one.
It's surprising how heavy a pile of more than 5 or 6 leather jackets is!
Don't think you need individual garbage bags if kept in a sealable plastic tub.

I know it is best to lay them flat if possible rather than hanging, but most people simply do not have space to do that anyway.

I would avoid any type of plastic bag for leather, especially if you live in some hot and humid countries. I do not think you need to completely seal your jacket anyway, I use some fibre suit storage bags to store individual jackets simply buy hanging. Otherwise, if you just need to cover them, use out an old shirt on top.

Perhaps depends on where they will be stored, but may be an idea to have some protection against little beasties who might have a snack or create a palatial leather home while you're gone.

No no to plastic bags or sealed plastic tubs. I agree leather needs to breath rather than be sealed up. I would lay them flat or folded once with maybe a cotton sheet covering them.

They are going into a regular storage unit in the Central Valley of California where it can get pretty hot in the Summer. I might be able to afford a climate controlled unit if someone would buy one of my jackets that I have in classified.

If I was putting them in a storage unit, I'd just hang them on a broom/pipe or garment rack and leave some space between them so the air can circulate around them freely. There won't be much dust to settle on them in an enclosed unit, and if it's going to be (very) hot, you don't want them enclosed in anything that will contain/magnify the heat and prevent them from responding to it. They need to breathe and/or outgas if there are any chemical reactions.

Other quick thoughts-- I would inquire as to which pest control measures the facility manager employs. Employ some controls yourself if you have to.

And have a friend check on the unit a couple of times while you are away.

Then forget about it and enjoy tropical living.

I too am near the Central Valley so I get the dry heat. At the moment I have a closet floor so that's where They often end up. But I have an old steamer trunk and a seamen's chest for long term storage. I made supported shelves to eliminate stack weight. They hold 3 to four each.

Perhaps I am prude but growing up in a military household...if I threw my stuff on the floor, that same floor would've wiped with my ass. I learned at an early age to put my stuff back where it belongs and to unfold socks and unball clothes before putting them in a washing machine. Fold my shirts and pants so well you could teach a geometry lesson off the corners. I can't abide by throwing stuff on the floor. Whatever you do jonesy...don't just toss them in a heap in a closet. Please.
