What is it about the Campdraft?

I think there's something about the style. Didn't Stetson say the OR was their most popular hat, or the most popular hat of all time? The OR style is snappy but slightly less formal than a regular fedora, so it lends itself well to both formal and informal looks. Even Borsalino did a clone. The Campdraft is just the best of the modern production versions, unless you want to shell out $250 for a modern Borsalino.

There is indeed some photographic evidence that bears this out, but it would be wrong to post it here quite yet...;)

I think there are some subtle differences between the Akubra OR and the Stetson OR. The ribbon treatment is just slightly different, and I think the crown may be slightly fuller and the brim slightly wider. As I said, very subtle differences. On the whole, however, I think that it is accurate to say that an unbashed Campdraft is about as close as you're going to get to the style of a vintage OR in a modern production hat.

Cheers,
JtL

Here are a few shots of my recent 3X Stetson Open Road. I just got this from E - Bay, and it is not in real good shape but.... although this is the only OR I now own, it is different than the other two I have had.
The brim on this one is 3 inches, I believe the other two were 2 3\4 and 2 7\8s. The crown on this one is 4 1\4 at the pinch.
I will say that my Campdraft has a much more abundant crown and the 'legs' on the bow of my Campdraft are longer.

I like the casual look of the thin ribbon, and I like the brim width of the campdraft. Add to that the high, straight crown that looks good no matter how you crease it, and you've got the perfect hat.

I agree. I have never steam or water set mine. I just punch it down, or sit on it, or whatever I feel like. It always gives a great, casual look with lots of personality.

Riccardo, Just contact Ron Lilleburn at HatsDirect.com and let him know that you are interested in a Campdraft in Grey. He has indicated that they are trying to have one available in 2009. Several of us are on their waiting list. Please join us.

It's cheap.

It's a real hat, fur felt, you can shape it yourself, but you feel free as a bird wearing it, because you don't care if it gets messed up. Just chuck it out and buy another. Disposible, just like anything else you buy these days. Computer memory too small? Throw it away and buy a new computer. Campdraft got stained? Trash it and get another from HatsDirect.
Kabuto, I don't know if your comment is tongue-in-cheek or not.

However, I find no problem with either the price or durability of the Campdraft. I find it to be affordable rather than cheap and durable rather than disposable. Not too shabby for an accessory that many men may wear daily.

I wouldn't ever state that the price one pays for anything necessarily affects how one cares for an item. Worth and value, to an individual, are not determined by price alone.
Nor can everyone afford to replace even the most advantageously-priced items at will.

I suppose one's point of view (POV) is directly proportional to one's disposable income in most (but not all) cases.

While it is of high quality and not "cheap" it is very affordable/inexpensive. Because it's inexpensive you can wear it without a care in the world. If it gets messed up beyond repair, it's affordable to replace.

Mine came from Hatsdirect. Maybe they're temporarily sold out? The silverbelly has been very popular lately.

I don't know how it panned out, but the Stetson exec. interviewed in Hat Talk said that the OR had been the best selling hat, but the Indy model may have passed it. He had retired, I believe, right after the first Indy craze hit. Of course, he didn't seem to be basing his statement on any sort of figures.

The point you're all missing is...

The Campdraft craze is mob related.

The Kingpin is one RBH, the Godfather of the Thin Ribbon Brotherhood. There is no blame to be thrown around. ;)

No. You're missing the point. The Campdraft dropped 30% in price in a very short time making it a good deal again, and many of us jumped on it because WE like the hat at that price. If the price hadn't dropped there would probably not have been all this attention. That is true of all Akubras which have numerous threads since October when this happened. I can tell you that in my real life I'm something of an expert on crowd behavior, and that's not what's going on here.

We're just having fun. Is that a problem for you?
