I am getting back a small chunk and will use some for paying a short term loan used for part 2 of the property taxes.

With the rest: I will have to use on getting the house painted!

Would have rather considered:
trip to Europe to visit relatives or other travel
Getting that laser eye correction done
big screen tv.

May I recommend a paint? Take a look at Sherwin Williams paint. They may be a bit more expensive, but their paint is VERY high quality. The people that run the stores are also highly trained. They have to pass several comany exams about the products, so they can answer just about every question you can think of.

Sherwin Williams has a paint called Duration that is guaranteed for as long as you own your home. The paint is also a one coat paint that has a self-primer, which eliminates a couple steps. If the paint is applied correctly, they guarantee that it won't fade or peel. My mom recently changed the color of her trim from chocolate brown to white, and used that product. It only took one coat, and she said it was the easiest paint to use she has ever tried.

If you hire a paint contractor, and they currently buy paint from a SW store, they may have special pricing available and may get a better price than if you bought it.

And no, I don't work for SW, but my husband did, for 3 years. I heard a lot about their products and I used several of them for my projects. I really belive that their paint is superior. Even if you don't buy paint from them, check them out. The folks that work there are highly educated and know their paint

Yeah, really. I've gotten into the habit of forwarding my refund to the next quarter's tax. I think this has kept my 1-man business from being audited or otherwise harrassed by the G-men - the IRS

I painted my house a few years ago and it turned out very well: green body, lighter green on the dormer and gables, light gray trim and dark gray doors. The virtual paint tool at BenjaminMoore.com really helped me see what colors would look good, and it kept me from making some big mistakes.

I have to say this: a few months after I painted my house, someone I had a huge crush on came over to drop something off. I was so glad I'd painted my house--I would have hated him seeing it shabby!

Yeah, they have nothing better to do. My grandmother was audited 3 times while she was in her 80's, then when she died at 90 she got audited 6 months after she died.:rage:

I recently got a £300 tax refund. I used it thus:

Paid for a meal out with a few of my closest friends.
Purchased my first digital camera.

The important thing I've found is share your wealth a little. That way you never feel it has been wasted on frivolous items.

I had the eye correction done about a year and a half ago after wearing glasses for almost 40 years. It's great! On the plus side, just before I had it done I was issued my first set of bifocals (while I was still active duty) but a unexpected side effect is that my near vision improved as well. I'll probably have to go back to using reading glasses in the not-to-distant future, but for now I'm enjoying it.

Of course, the big screen TV might come in handy if you don't get the correction done!

We're getting a refund this year but only because I was able to take a significant credit for lifetime learning. We had to send in money to pay state taxes. I used to try to keep it balanced so I'd get a minimal refund back but since I got married and retired our income has fluctuated so much it's been impossible to do so.

We'll probably use our refund to help pay for our daughter's wedding bills.
