What hat should a man buy a lady for a gift?

I purchased this great felt hat from The Bonnet Store for my girlfriend for Christmas.

I got it in charcoal. The "feathers" are made of the same felt as the hat and have bendable wires in them. I love it and I think my girlfriend does too. Now we have the likable mission of finding her a coat to go with it.

Any ladies have any suggestions on how a gentleman should approach acquiring a hat for their better half? Is it not suggested at all? My girl, for example, doesn't like to recieve gift certificates. That's fine by me, but it does make certain things a little tougher. The world of womens' hats seems to be a little overwhelming.

Easy... Dont buy her a hat ... offer to acutally take her "Hat Shopping". Buying one hat you may get it wrong. Not just the size of shape - but the whole design. She will have knowledge of her whole wardrobe as to will go with what she has.

Showing you want to spend time with her, and not complain as she drags you around lots of shops will win many brownie points!

Though to make it easier, find out which shops are the best to go to, then you will still feel in control as to where your are going. Also saying 'how about we look at the collection at XXXX' before she buys the most expensive hat in the store- should also assist budgeting ...Though don't leave the most expensive sstore till last!

Gift cards wouldn't work, his girlfriend doesn't like gift certificates. The shopping trip is the best bet. Sounds like she'll be a happy girl.

Fletch and Story -- Those hats are so awful, and so very funny!

I agree with the majority here: I would not want anyone buying me a hat unless they took me to try it on or showed me exactly what they were getting. I would want to make sure the hat looked good on me.

The hat you picked out is lovely, the kind of hats women wore in the 30's and 40's. I love it, but would not look good in it, alas. if your girlfriend looks good in that hat, she must be tickled pink -- and now she gets a coat to go with it! Wow!

Surely you buy her whatever hat she wants? If she's nice she'll pick something she knows you can easily afford, just as you'd do for her . . .
