What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

In honor of the Season 3 Premier of The Traitors (US version) This old G.A. Dunn and Co that I modified the crease as a sort of tribute hat to the hat host Alan Cummings wore during Traitor tower (murder) scenes in Season Two.. it was a very tight off axis “butt crease” with a fairly modest brim and a gold bar bow keep…. I went with the gold silhouette lady pin. I might try to rework this crease to get it a bit more dramatic like his. This season he has moved to a more somber look with a bigger wider brimmed number but kept the gold bar bow keep. I prefer last seasons look.

Today its one of my Dads old hats. Was way too small (size 7) for me to wear it as-is, so I worked it out to a 7-1/4 over a couple months and reblocked. Had to open up the leather sweatband a LOT to get it on my head, so someday Ill fit a new leather band. It was his Texas Masonic hat for meetings. Nothing fancy, just a Master Hatters of Texas 3x from Cavendars. After I got it to a wearable size, I trimmed brim down to 2-3/4" ( was 4-1/2" originally) and gave it a bit of a "Justified" vibe.

Got it transformed from a sentimental hat gathering dust in the closet, to a wearable personalized hat that sees daylight on a fairly regular basis. Thinking this one may eventually get a 5/8 grosgrain ribbon and Campaign bow instead of the storebought leather band. Also debating doing a bit of sanding/pouncing to thin the brim down and soften a bit... Id love it if it was just a bit less stiff and hard. (till that day gets here its a decent expedient hardhat lol)

Etsuko was in one of her favourites, an Akubra Leisure Time.

On a side note, some time back, I asked about braces/suspenders on the Lounge. Well, I finally purchased some. I got some button down Y shaped ones for work, followed by another button down Y shaped, but slightly fancier ones for play, and these clip on X shaped ones for working in the garden etc. I really like them. I like the look, and my shirt no longer comes untucked, so in the winter, they’re warmer than a belt. Dad hated braces, so he never had me or my brothers wear them as kids. View attachment 673004
On another side note, like Simeon @StoryPNW, I’ve admired the cowboy boots I’ve seen on the Lounge, and am keen to get a pair. Unfortunately, in Japan, that’s no easy task, and I don’t think it would be a good idea to get my first (and likely, only) pair online. I’ve found a shop in Osaka that seems to have a good selection. Here’s their list of brands.

Boy that’s a beautiful jacket, too!

Looking great, Gary, top to bottom. I still think you have a western movie star look!

Good luck shopping for boots. It should be fun. Tony Lama have always been my go-to's. The company has been around for decades (in various forms). Good quality in a mid-range price. I have two pair of Luchesse which are excellent boots. They have a fit comparable to the Tony Lama, but they can be expensive. I have heard good things about the Rios but have never owned a pair myself.

My only advice for dress boots is to buy a soft leather. My preference has always been calf skin or ostrich. They always seem to fit better and break in faster. Many of the exotics (elephant, alligator, lizard, snakeskin) were always too stiff for my liking.

Here is a very brief description of some of the more common boot leathers.

Good luck.

A great looking bowler, Rick, and an attractive workhorse hat for your type of shooting!

And now for something completely different...... the nice mailman brought me a couple packages today.. One a Barbour waxed cotton flat cap, and number two, this cute little Stetson Select Quality Philadelphia bowler Really nice shape... just needs a bit of steaming and smoothing on the crown.

Always wanted an old Philadelphia Stetson, AND I needed a close fitting hat so the brim doesnt get in the way when shooting the flintlock. Looks cool with it and I shouldnt get sparks or powder burns like a bigger brim might see. Has ALL the tags including the original store price tag ! ( the price tag matches the embossing on the sweatband!)

Man that poor rifle hasnt been out in the sunshine for several months! I REALLY need to do some serious dusting and oiling! lol
