The Treasure Valley is white from end to end this morning. Depending on where you are, (most of it fog shrouded) you’ve got white iced-over trees, white iced-over fields, or fresh snow. No pics, 'cause I was driving, but lovely to see.

Into nearbyCaldwell for a quick doctor's appointment for my wife, then breakfast at our favorite coffee shop.

The out-and-about was conducted under cover of my 1950s-vintage Executive Finish Adam.

Once again a cold snap has descended on Rock Bottom with the temperature hovering @ 19 degrees...BRRRRR !! This morning's choice of hats is from an obscure (to me anyways) hatmaker that I had never heard of...Pelham.
It appears to be very well made with an un-reeded sweatband which makes for a very comfortable hat.

Everythings damp and chilly this morning. Perfect day for a New-to-me hat! Happy to report that I managed to shrink the new 7-1/2 ebay hat down to somewhere between 7-1/4- 7-3/8... I can live with that. ( ad said 7-1/4 and 3" brim... it was actually a loose 7-1/2 with a 3-1/2" brim) Its a 5x Stetson Gun Club. Came with a 3-1/2" brim which I trimmed down to 2-7/8". Steamed it back into an open crown and did some Cleaning, brushing and light sanding to smooth up the surfaces. Worked it into something that didnt look so much like a stamped out hat. It came as a fairly flat brim so I added a bit of a dip down up front and swoop up in back. Ill prob put in on a brim block later today and add a bit more snap to the brim. Fairly heavy western weight felt. Felt was is pretty decent shape. No moth nibbles or stubborn stains. A few hours work and Im pretty happy with it. Kinda looks like a chubby Stratoliner.

Off to coffee!

Looks good Rick. Care to share how you shrunk this hat that much ? I've had some luck stretching a hat but not so much the other way. I have my eye on a size 7 1/4 hat but wear a size 7 and would love to know the secret.

Looks good Rick. Care to share how you shrunk this hat that much ? I've had some luck stretching a hat but not so much the other way.

I folded out the sweatband and removed the liner. Gave the base under the sweat a good dose of steam and then hit it with a heat gun, inside and outside the bottom of the crown. Flattened out the brim a bit and set aside to cool and shrink. took two or three steam/ heat/ cool cycles. When looked like the felt was pulling a bit tighter, I folded the leather sweat back down, and hit it with a dose of steam and the heat gun so I could get the leather to draw up.

In old days one could just dampen a hat and put it on top of a lampshade and let the heat from the light bulb shrink it up. These days that options pretty much out because we cant buy incandescent light bulbs... LED just dont put out enough heat. Been thinking about picking up a brooder light for chickens from the farm supply and just set up an old lamp as a dedicated hat shrinker lol. In hot weather we can just dampen a hat and put it on the truck dashboard in the sun.

Its not a precise science, and doesnt work that well on some furs ( I understand that higher quality pure beaver felt or the really dense rabbit like the Akubra Heritage felt wont shrink much) Oh and be CAREFUL with a wool hat... you could turn a 7-1/2 wool hat into a 6-1/4 pretty fast lol

Thanks Rick. Every time I try to shrink a hat with the lightbulb trick the leather sweatband ends up cracking on me...haven't had any luck yet. Besides, I just checked that hat I've been lusting over and they want 96.81 shipping from Austin, Texas to Kentucky !! That's almost as much as they want for the hat !! Crazy times I tell ya !!

I might buy a really cheap hat to experiment with anyways. Thanks again.
