Preface: Yesterday’s hat, obviously , was not yet a hat, but I hope for it to be someday. I’m looking forward to seeing what can be done without a big investment in tools and machinery. My biggest questions will be how to sew in a sweatband and/or ribbon, and how to cut the brim nicely without a rounding jack.

I spent some time reshaping and in some cases reflanging some hats that seemed to have blocking flaws, awkward fit, or dimensions that just didn’t work for me. I’m happy with the results so far and look forward to getting better at this. One discovery leads me to believe that a hat that’s a little too big is best served as a pork pie, for a more comfortable fit on my head. I don’t like to use sizing foam.

Anyway here are some pictures of my modifications (sorry— forgot the before pics), and today I’m wearing what was an Amish hat yesterday.

Etsuko & I are visiting Toyama Prefecture, one of my favourite places in Japan, for three nights. Two hats each for the trip.
Etsuko in her Tula palm straw and me in my Akubra Range (hemp) to meet up with a friend for dinner.

The food was great. Toyama is famous for its seafood.

Back at the hotel.

The next day we visited Kurobe dam. This is a pretty amazing place. I’ll get more up in the Fedoras Afield thread eventually.

I was in my Sunbody, as we were expecting rain, and Etsuko in one of her Toucan Collection hats.

The rain didn’t arrive until we got back to the station where we had left our car.
Sushi for dinner, but only space for one more photo, so here’s a teaser…

Cavanagh Toro Brown
4 3/4 Crown as shaped (approx 5 3/8 open)

1 7/8 brim with Cavanagh Edge
$30 Price Tag

I could not pass up this thirty dollar Cavanagh for just ten bucks. The felt and ribbon color combo plus the feather makes for a striking look. Excluding the brown leather sweat that might indicate otherwise, the somewhat stiffer felt, shorter brim and less substantial crown along with the thirty dollar price point had me thinking 1960s and the manufacturing tag seems to support that dating. I have another Cavanagh with almost identical specs in black with black sweat and a twenty-five dollar price tag. I might like to pull that one out and compare them side by side. One thing is for sure is it really shows the Hat-enomics of the time when you think how substantial of a hat you could buy for ten dollars less just a decade prior. All of that being said when you view it through the lens of 1960s production from HCA, this is a very nice hat. I love the color scheme and Cavanagh edge and it really makes an easy wearing hat.

Thanks Stefan…. Havn‘t added many stingies of late. After focusing mostly on 50s and later. But it’s nice to step into that old comfort zone from time to time.

I’m still researching stiffener threads but haven’t ran across any info on straws yet.

I typically use a strong blend of shellac and denatured alcohol, however, when that doesn’t work on a loose straw weave or on a work hat made of straw that’s going to get a lot of abuse I’ve used a strong mixture of Elmer’s glue and water in a spray bottle.
In a pinch, strong hair spray works, too.

Thank you for the response. I actually had a voice in my head telling me hairspray would work.

Looks like it’s time for me to start experimenting with shellac, though.

I’ve got more to read about that on the Lounge before I try, but good to know I can start off on my old hemp before turning to felts.

Beauty of a day, though very hot and humid.
Was supposed to be starting a remodel rear deck today, but the house stands in the middle of an open hay field. No shade.
Talked myself out of it—easily.
