Been a few weeks since a beautiful morning to sit on the porch with my tea (I’m off coffee for the moment and miss it), and enjoy the breeze, lack of heat, lack of extreme humidity, lack of rain.

Box ticker, that Caxton! But great hat show all the way!
Thank you, Randall.

Thank you, Randy.

Really like the look of that one, Marcel.

Love the leopard skin pattern on the Habig. Just the kind of thing Etsuko’s been looking for!
A few raindrops can make any hat more versatile. :) Don't think you're gonna get that one past Etsuko though...

That hat sets off the suit and tie perfectly, I love the open weave pattern.

My wife, Tina, had a surprise for me this morning. The weather has not been that agreeable for straw hats, but when this morning brought sunshine with it, my lady requested that I wear my Gamboa Panama. I did as she had asked, that's when she presented my surprise.

She has made me a new pair of trousers to replace the ones damaged at the dry cleaners. I knew that said trousers were in the pipeline but other than a fitting I hadn't seen them. "I love that hat," she told me, "my new trousers compliment it perfectly," I replied.

The trousers and hat combination work so well that I could take the Aloha shirt off and still the two would look the part.

But being old with an old man's belly, I will put the shirt back on.
Very cool, Robert. If you leave the aloha shirt off, you can have a go at playing for the squadra azzurra!

Actually Stefan, that's the wrong shape ball, gli Azzurri is more akin to my sport.

Cavanagh Toro Brown
4 3/4 Crown as shaped (approx 5 3/8 open)
2 inch Burgundy Grosgrain Ribbon
1 7/8 brim with Cavanagh Edge
$30 Price Tag

I could not pass up this thirty dollar Cavanagh for just ten bucks. The felt and ribbon color combo plus the feather makes for a striking look. Excluding the brown leather sweat that might indicate otherwise, the somewhat stiffer felt, shorter brim and less substantial crown along with the thirty dollar price point had me thinking 1960s and the manufacturing tag seems to support that dating. I have another Cavanagh with almost identical specs in black with black sweat and a twenty-five dollar price tag. I might like to pull that one out and compare them side by side. One thing is for sure is it really shows the Hat-enomics of the time when you think how substantial of a hat you could buy for ten dollars less just a decade prior. All of that being said when you view it through the lens of 1960s production from HCA, this is a very nice hat. I love the color scheme and Cavanagh edge and it really makes an easy wearing hat.

The temperature is still down here due to stormy weather so I took my “humburg” out for family visit today.

The liner says “His Excellency World’s Premier Hat” under a good quality old-feeling plastic tip. I reckon this is a 50s hat.

This has been my official favorite since transforming it last month from a homburg to a pencil curl. But it’s been too hot outdoors so til now we’ve just been hanging out together inside.

I am thinking of asking Mike Gannon to make a replica of this guy. He’s got a super boxy 5 inch crown, a beautiful magenta-infused bow and a 2 9/16 inch brim before the curl. Feels like rabbit fur so I would love to upgrade the model to a full beaver work horse and push the brim out to 2 5/8.

The beaver version would be a trucker’s hat, fully ready for the elements; western enough to wear in a grease pit yet formal enough when calling on distant relatives or old friends out on the road. With a removable liner and some vent holes he’d be ready for year-round service.

My kind of hat.

Even if I don’t get the Gannon made, I like this version well enough already.
