Those are all fantastic looking. Just curious - did you coat them with a silicone protectant or is it something else? I've been thinking about using silicone spray on a couple of mine.

Gary some of my treated hats were created with a coat to the weave. In the modern Stetson case, each woven fiber is coated. When I am wearing other coated/treated woven hats this summer I will make sure I include a description of what I am handling.

The pic below showcases the coating and how water is beading on the surface.

Thanks for that info Eric. I didn’t realize that was an option with any of the straws out there.

Early 50's Cavanagh that arrived today. Very thin, soft felt, like a Western style Borsalino. 2 3/4 inch brim. I'd say it's a relatively lightweight hat. Has no price tags.

Edward, this might be your best bet as of now.

Oh! Yes, thanks - that could well be. I'm looking to expand my range of straws. Tempted to add another grey Capricorn 'for best', though I've also been looking at these hemp Stetsons - there's that one, and the Stratoliner. That darker, rich brown very much appeals; I've also fancied the idea of a black straw for a few years (influenced by Connery's in Goldfinger, though I'd prefer an earlier-style shape). Starting to keep an eye out for late season sales on straws, including a few porkpie styles. That's a particularly nice Stetson - will definitely go digging there.

I've noticed there's a bit of a price jump between the toyo straw and the hemp Stetsons - are the hemp hats significantly more durable / able to cope with a touch of rain?

One thing I find very practical with the plastic Capricorn is being able to shower it down to clean it when it gets a bit dusty looking - a plus wearing it in London and Beijing.

I finished the evening in a Ecuadorian Panama Hat Company Supernatural milan. It is a mouthful and a total worthy mouthful. A glorious milan!

A morning walkabout in the last of the passing rain showers. A coated hat sold at Peoples Clothing Co., IA.

There is a place for a coated hat on my hat rack. This one has the unique crease with the bar down the side. The hat proportions and crease style point at the 30-early 40's style. I purchased this hat from a find that was dated to this time period.

Morning cold brew under the coated brim of a Stetson Whippet. The coated hat gets wet and recovers just fine. Even the binding and ribbon show no after effects from the rain.

Cheers, Eric -

Cracking set of hats. The Whippets is <chef's kiss>. I like the perforating on the coated hat, too - does it wear noticeably cooler as a result?

Gorgeous stripe in that suit. 30s?

In reality, I busted this one out yesterday. First straw of the season for me.

Disney Milan.

Nice! There's something about a straw porkpie that goes great with such a wide range of wardrobe. For me they also have a certain.... appealingly louche vibe to them, which is doubtless a Sinatra association.

You don't happen to know more about which modern Stetsons are treated in this way, do you? One reason I've veered to polystraw over the years has been living in a climate where rain can sometimes be unpredictable; a treated hemp that could take a bit of a shower would definitely appeal...

Looking back a few days, I really need to thoroughly thank the thoughtful folks for their generous comments on the Mallory.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!

I need to remember to bring my other glasses.

Geoffrey certainly looks impressed!

That 'Sinatra' crease is superb. Very distinctive, but not something you see at all often.

The hats of the week (after a week absence). I'll just start at the end and count to ten backwards for the selection.

We've had some sunny days in Elsinore the past week, but the easterly winds have kept the temperatures low. That's all due to change next week, apparently.

So, it's probably the last chance to wear the Dobbs Gay Blade for an evening outing before autumn kicks in.

I really dig that ribbon color! The felt too, for that matter, but the ribbon really caught my eye.

The Stratoliner wins it, hands down. Always a winner Stefan.

Tina is into making my hat band adornments. It's looks a bit big, but don't you dare tell her that I said that.

Very classy pug on that one

Thanks sir.

The vintage pugs are often my fav patterns/colors and better materials than I have found on-line. (It may be that I am not looking in the right place as the internet is an enormous place.) I frequently say I enjoy the patina while in truth I just like the pug and I am "loyal" to it.

Cheers, Eric -

Beginning of the week I wore my made over Stetson Pinnacle, Hat re-blocked, re-flanged with a replacement two cord thin ribbon to make the crown appear taller.
