4 3/4 Crown as shaped
1 1/8 matching grosgrain ribbon
2 1/4 brim with 1/8 matching binding

Came across this cool Penney’s Marathon at a super low Buy It Now price that I could not pass up. The photos showed it would need some reshaping… and on top of that it arrived in a box about half the size of the hat. So a serious steaming and brushing was in order. I think it came out quite well. While brushing, I was able to minimize a few discoloration spots that actually hide themselves fairly well. There are a few moth nips here and there.. but nothing too bad.

I really like the color of the felt.. a medium charcoal grey. The tones somehow shift from blue to yellow depending light. I love the styling with the signature Marathon ribbon work.

It was sold as a size 7 though from the pictures the size tag appeared to also have a fraction after the 7 that I could not make out. Turns out the size is 7 1/4. Somehow however… due to I’m guessing a little bit of shrinkage it actually fits fairly well. Just seats a tad lower than I regularly wear my hats. Would not want to wear it on a windy day.. but still comfortable.

I have almost another probably early 1950s Marathon with this styling in tan that I really enjoy. This one… Considering the logo and sweat I’m gonna guess a bit later… maybe late 50s early 60s. I figured due to the size.. I might move this one along.. but being that it’s fitting fairly well.. I may keep it around for a little while anyway.

Sunday's have become synonymous with: "A Week in Hats." I'm loving this week's choice. The Open Road for sure, but I could give a wear to The Panama this afternoon.

We are doing something else that's synonymous with Sunday. Like going to church. It's quite a big church,
it is in fact, Salisbury Cathedral.


The reason for our visit? We are off to a concert there. A very special concert, Swing Unlimited Big Band are playing our kind of music.

In my relatively short experience with felt hats, I've found it amazing how some of these dirty and bent up hats can turn out so nice with just a brush and a tea kettle.

That's a nice-looking hat and it doesn't look too low on your head at all. I actually like for mine to fit a little loose and low on my head. I think it's a cool look.

Something different today. Went to the open air Gaelic Mass at the Celtic festival downtown. Then I had a beer. And wore a Dalton.

And since it's also Air Show weekend, my backyard was strafed by Zeros yesterday.

Never a dull moment.

Thank you Gary…. my apparently odd shaped noggin has allowed hats with marked sizes from 6 3/4 to 7 1/4 fit reasonably and comfortably well. Not complaining!

Wow I wouldn’t be complaining either - that’s awesome. I’m pretty much 7 3/8 with a long oval head. That means I have to steam most hats into a longer shape or else they’ll have gaps on the sides and leave a crease on my forehead…

Which brings me to show the hat I’m wearing today, at least for a few hours. I usually don’t wear felt in the Summer but it’s not hot so far today and it’s supposed to rain later. Anyway this is probably the best-fitting hat I’ve ever put on right out of the box. I just picked this one up last week. The size is 7 3/8 extra long oval. Perfect - almost as if decades ago whenever they made this hat they measured my head in every possible way and custom made it for me.

I’ve noticed lots of guys here don’t seem to like a narrowish brim hat like this, but I’m used to wearing bowlers so it’s in my comfort zone. I don’t think I would go smaller. My wife says it’s one of her favorites yet. It’s my first Resistol but I think it’s safe to say it’s not my last.
