I agree, Brent. Nutria, even in old hats, doesn't have a very nice hand, in my opinion.

I’ve only handled a few vintage nutria hats. The Stetsons and the one Barbisio didn’t have impressive hands. These Sunrise nutria felts can be given a fine finish and are very smooth, but I think that beaver still shades them…even if just by a small amount. Michael Gannon had the same opinion where he was impressed but still thought Winchester’s beaver bodies made overall nicer hats. So far, I much prefer the Sunrise nutria over Winchester’s beaver when talking about western hats. Both Gannon and Mike at Northwest are trying to address the deficiencies in Winchester western weight beaver and the hats should be arriving before Christmas. Time will tell.

Truth be told, if vintage hats were easier to find in my size I don’t think I would ever have gone the custom route.

On and off rain all day in my neighborhood. A Lee Commentator was my hat choice for a joyful dog soirée. My older dog got very excited seeing the local raccoons.

I switched to an Emerson for a walkabout. Unique ribbon treatment on this hat makes it fun to wear.

I can feel a few raindrops, so thank goodness the hat has been "showerproofed by Dryette."

I have a busy schedule to follow in sorting out the hats that have invaded my office in the last few weeks

For some errands around the city today it is the turn of this transformation of a woman Borsalino "Bolero" by Fleur.

It is certainly one of my favorites among those that have been taken from old felts

from my extensive sample size of three vintage Stetson nutrias (ca. 1910-20 Boss Raw Edge 'real nutria fur', 30's 3-ply band 'real Nutria quality, and then a later more mid century black 'Nutria quality'), I'd say that the earlier two definitely had a finer hand. The Boss Raw Edge especially, but those were higher-end hats at the time too. It's not particularly more coarse than my other black curl brim Stetsons or some of the hats that were in reach this morning when I was conducting this obviously very scientific test (). I would say that my Stetson 100 feels finer than the Nutria hats for sure. My HJ poet almost feels like silk in comparison.

so I guess I would concur that Nutria didn't necessarily have the finest finish, but the earlier hats have fairly minor differences in hand compared to some of my other hats.

I have a vintage Nutria Stetson, late 40s-early '50s. It's not smooth like Beaver but it's still a good durable felt. A vintage Nutria is definitely worth adding to a collection. I'd like to have a couple more, actually.

I don’t think that comparing current nutria from Sunrise with vintage nutria felt from Stetson and others is very useful. What’s nice is that Gannon now has personal experience with this current nutria as well as Winchester’s beaver. Michael can answer your questions steer you one way or the other based his own observations and based on what type of hat you want. I love all my custom nutria hats, but I’d chose beaver for most fedoras…except for the colors: zero regrets on commissioning this midnight blue.
