My Classic Boater from Lock & Co. Hatters arrived today. This is the most "vintage" style boater hat that I could find sold new. It has a 2 1/2 inch brim, a 3 inch crown, and is made from sisal straw. Here are some pictures:

The straw on this hat is extremely thick, which adds a considerable amount of weight to the hat. I ordered a 7 3/8 (59 cm) hat size, but the low crown bottomed out, leaving the hat to sit higher on my head than other hats. Fortunately, with some adjustment tape, the hat fits snug. Still, this is the kind of hat that would fall off your head if you bend over, no matter how snug it fits.

Here is a front view of the hat, which displays the thick sisal weave. Unlike some other sisal hats, this weave is not fragile, and would definitely last a lifetime.

This hat came with a mesh-style liner and a leather sweatband. The waves in the sweatband are caused by the resizing tape that I added.

Here is the boater side-by-side with a Scala Panama Boater. The bandwork on the Panama Boater was done by me. As you can see, the extra 1/2 inch of height on the Panama Boater crown makes a significant difference for fit, and where the hat rests on your head. The Classic Boater does have a standard "boater" brim size of 2 1/2 inches, where the Panama Boater has a skimmer-like 2 inch brim (although advertised as 2 3/8). I guess they took an extra 1/2 inch from one dimension and stuck it somewhere else.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. I ordered the Classic Boater on February 12th with standard shipping, and it arrived DHL Express today from the UK to the US, February 16th. That's faster than any Akubra hat ever arrived, even with express shipping.
