Hat number 8 of the Mystery Box 9 a Champ FeatherWeight Kasmir Finish in a semi western style. I was happy to find this one as it is my first Champ other than a small 60s Stingy that was even a bit small for me. This unlined lightweight hat checks in at a fit trim 92 grams... fairly light considering it’s 2 3/4 brim. The black and gold Champ Featherweight scale logo on the sweat is fantastic. The felt color is “Toast” a medium tan. Hardly a blemish on this nearly pristine hat.

The 9th and final entry from the Mystery Box Nine is one that stood out to me right out of the box. Mallory The Dallas is a hat I’ve had my eye on for quite a bit but hadn’t found the right hat or deal. The Dallas appears to be Mallory’s take on the Stetson Stratoliner and wow did they get this one right. Most of The Dallas I’ve come across have been in a warmer Silverbelly felt... this one is in a colder light Silvermist coloring with silver grosgrain thin ribbon and binding. Though it is not indicated by name this Mallory is also an unlined lightweight felt coming in at the exact same 92 grams as the Champ Featherweight.. or apparently 2 1/2 packs of cigarettes... if that is the standard. The only blemishes are a handful of unfortunate moth nibbles on the brim and side of the crown right over the ribbon. Though not too significant... they are fairly visible on this color of felt. The previous owner had a few strips of paper towels under the sweat which have this 7 1/8 fitting perfectly for me.

It has been a lot of fun revealing the Mystery Box 9. Some real gems in this bunch. I believe the final three and hat number 1.. the Black Playboy all can make their case to claim the top spot.

Intermezzo in Italian week. Don't worry they will be there.

The Thibet (by Ecuyer&Thomas) got its first outing this week courtesy of the lousy weather. I've been a bit harsh about the felt of this hat; it is better than I gave it credit for at first.

I think you'll like this one. Courtesy of @PanosChris (thanks, Panos!). Stetson 3X beaver Open Road (didn't have an Open Road, so fills in a gap nicely).

 

[The Shoe]

I wore my Habig to work today. This has been a frustrating hat - slightly too big, my cone head hit the centre dent and pushed it up and there was a cloth sweat band stuck to the front of the leather sweatband. I took the advice of @daizawaguy and sprayed the felt and sweatband with water to get it to shrink. That worked ok but it made the brim wonky. I finally got around to steaming it the other day to smooth out the brim, at least to a somewhat satisfactory degree and while I was at it, I gave it a much tighter pinch. I also removed the cloth stuck to the sweatband. This damaged the leather, but not as badly as I thought it might. I also fiddled with the bash a little. Overall I’m pretty happy with this, the third iteration of this hat. I finally feel comfortable wearing it.
