This week I will feature the C. G. Wilke Guben, Germany Hat Factory. Founded by Carl Gottlob Wilke in 1822 Guben, Germany. He invented the weather-proof wool hat and was a major contributor in the mechanization of hat making. C. G. Wilke manufactured both Wool and Fur (including Velour) Soft and Stiff Felt Hats. C. G. Wilke Factory was severely damaged during WWII. Guben was the largest hat making center in Germany up to WWII but was heavily damaged during the war. What remained of the Guben Hat Industry infrastructure after WWII was nationalized as VEB United Hutwerke Guben (Guben was located in the GDR).

This is my last entry in the C.G. Wilke Guben series.

C.G. Wilke "Flamand" possibly late 1920s. The quality mark is "Flamand" which is Unshorn Velour Hair. The Felt is a Melange and has a very soft hand. I will let the photos describe the unique Form. This is one of my most treasured hats.

Reinhold Mette, Freiberg Saxony was established in 1926 and is still owned by the family today (Barbara Mette, Freiberg). Prior to opening the hat shop they manufactured fur felt ware (established 1825).

Akubra Country Club with a Guatemalan back strap loom woven hat band on the Masked Corona Crawl today. Down the hill and along the coastal path one and a half miles to Keålia Beach Park for a brisk swim out past the breakers at high tide in choppy water.

My dog and enjoyed a stroll on this cool spring morning. The birds are loud. It brings to mind the quote from Robin Williams, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s Party!’”

The bright morning sun had me enjoying a bigger brim on a Gannon Wanderer (silvermist beaver felt with charcoal trimmings).

I haven't looked in the last few days, but until recently at least these were pretty readily available from either ebay or army surplus stores for small money.

Super Lux - very period sounding name. Love that ribbon, kind of "puggish". The material on that suit is the bomb Michael.



I have a doctor's appointment next week, they are still closed so it will be video conferencing. I don't know how it will work to "turn my head and cough" on Zoom! Love that cap, that material really does look light and airy.

Art Fawcett will be missed in our community for sure, but he deserves a restful retirement. This Dualist is super sweet Jonesy. The light colors are such a great choice. I always loved his name for this type of duplex.


This is another fantastic, interesting hat Stefan. l love the liner logo. Princeton University is in New Jersey, but the name is very "Boston". It is strange that this American "brand" would have Mayser make their hats as a jobber. Is it 1950s?


Always love the Cury Fabio. But I absolutely am going nuts over that fabric on your suit jacket!! Love - Love - Love it.


I have been lusting after a Lo Blue soft cap for some time now. Love the material on this cap. How long does it take to get them from down under? Interesting comparison of the tones of gray. I wonder how much is dye lots versus age/patina? Stay warm my friend. I'll be trying to stay cool, it will be in the high 80s again here in Oregon.

Some of the more prolific German manufacturers, like Mayser and Wegener, produced a great many hats under various brands, probably on contract for wholesale companies or large retailers. Usually these were brought on the market under "posh" sounding names, like Windsor, Princeton, Carlton or under the retailers'house brand name. This one was sold through Konen Bekleidingshaus of Munich. Late fifties or early sixties for this one I'd say.

Thanks Brent. I'm a fan of mushroom hunting for sure. The lighter was a trail find from a hunt or two ago. Non working and only there for scale. I'm going to have a few of the morels for breakfast in a few minutes. Oh boy.

Thanks Fabio. The jacket is Swedish army and dated 1942. Whether that is the pattern date or the production date I don't know.

Nice to see the Portis out again, Michael Works well with the suit.

My daughter took a swing by to pick up her early birthday present... a Michael Gannon dark moss fedora with vintage ashen green ribbon and the "Rodolfo" style bowkeep with 2 color highlights. Bound brim with piccadilly ribbon, also quite old vintage stuff.

This arrived open crown, so I had the filtered water at boiling point when she arrived and she said she wanted a diamond crease like I bashed for my natural Gannon with the red slate ribbon. Done.

What's with these green hats all of a sudden? Looks good on her I must say. The colour of your hat is much better though.

The Princeton Hat Co. is a great looking hat! The color contrast between the Ribbon and Felt is fantastic. Probably another distributor's trademark.

Day 10 of 31 Hat Parade: Another 85 degree day calls for a light weight straw hat for our walk this morning. This John Cavanagh Optimo crease "stingy" in a wonderful fine weave. Most likely from the early to mid 1960s, as was the style. The style of crease in the crown of the hat is one of the many straw configurations available. This 50+ year old hat has a real "patina" to it's color. I could clean it to bright white again, but she shows her age quite well. Very light, and tight weave as seen in the picture with the penny. Cavanagh was Frank Sinatra's signature brand, think Rat Pack in the summer!

My appreciation for these hats grows the more I see of them. Works of art. The blue pug gives it a nice "spring" feel, Mike.
