What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I have been taking advantage of the warmer weather today. I began with a dog soiree while wearing a Gannon (bone beaver felt). The sun feels good.

Back home doing outside chores I was chilled and put on a warmer vest and changed hats. A stetson unlined Playboy was my hat choice.

Breakfast outside in a Monsavais cap.

Pre-lunch jaunt in a vintage Stetson Buccaneer. (Not exactly the same as the hat in the advertisement as it has only half of the brim spiral stitched. Until I can see an example of an entire stitched brim, I claim Buccaneer.)

After lunch I was hanging out by the dock in a Lee Desert Tones. The waterfowl are very busy today.

I headed out to do a "welfare check" on my wife's elderly Aunt. She is doing well and appreciated the groceries I dropped on the doorstep. We held a conversation thru the front window and shared a beverage. She sipped tea and I sipped a mug of coffee. I wore a Homburg. She commented that I needed to wear a less dressy hat. The homburg was to dressy. Right she is! Our discussion was easily started as she spoke about how her late husband wore a hat daily. His favorite hats were the "New York hats" -Mallory's. When their family was doing well, post depression, he had as many as 3 hats in the hall closet.

Took the new to me Resistol out for a spin today - a walk around the neighborhood with my wife.
Just for fun, when we got home I tried it with my poncho. I can't remember where the poncho is from - somewhere in South America - maybe Peru. I got it back home in New Zealand about 20 years ago. I used to wear it quite a bit, but not for a long time now. I figured it might work with this hat, though.

Today....inspired to the Max, i’m slummin with Max’s half brother.
The Beaver 50. As fine a felt as one could ask.
This one has a crease that is probably my overall favorite. Not my doing, it just does itself.
Churchill days are good for the soul.
Still good here in Almost Heaven country.

I made a carne asada today, with just the family, and took the precaution of taking it off. I didn't want it to get stained with coal or zinged.

A BBQ yesterday and almost all the snow is melted. Winter may be over soon.

Janyška "?" possibly late 1930s early 1940s. I couldn't find a paper label and didn't want to damage the sweatband so no model name. The black felt easily takes a dry crease and has a nice hand. This a formal hat with larger dimensions and a wider band / ribbon. There is no brim edge binding so you can really see the brim work. Overall this is a really fantastic hat. This hat is from my May 2016 NOS Czech find.

This week I will highlight Janyška & Cie. from Czechoslovakia. Janyška & Cie. was started in the 1920s in Valašské Meziříčí – Krásno about 25 km from Nový Jičín (location of JHS, BB, AP). Janyška & Cie. was a Czech company based on Austrian hat tradition. Janyška & Cie. became Tonak Factory 2 post WWII and the factory was closed 1961.

Light grey light weight felt
1 inch silver and striped mid ribbon
2 3/8 brim with silver grosgrain bound edge

I did not plan on wearing this hat today... but since it’s arrival this afternoon I haven’t taken it off. When you first see this hat the star is the super cool silver and grey striped mid ribbon. After closer inspection... this is some hat. It is a very light very moldable felt they called ‘California weight’. A fantastic for me 2 3/8 brim with a thin silver grosgrain bound edge along with a wind trolley. And extremely comfortable. Hopefully I can clean up some of the staining on the felt. But even if not I am nothing but happy with this hat.

Going retro with this pair.
The Stetson hails from the 20s, or so.
The Dobbs is from early 40s, maybe late 30s. The direct opposite of the bowler; this felt is so light and floppy!
I’ve noticed a few folks having hat band ribbons with “basting stitches” left in around the top of the ribbon edge. I’m not so convinced that they’re basting stitches. Maybe it is temporary stitching, but after installing several hatbands now, it doesn’t make sense why anyone would use basting to hold the top of a ribbon that is “supposed to be removed later, but was forgotten.” View attachment 228711

The thread used to hold down this ribbon is so thin and hard to see that I just noticed it this week!
always thought if I ever ended up with a hat that had these left in they would get removed, but these are so inconspicuous that I’ll leave them be, for the sake of originality preservation.

Is the Whippet oxblood? I'm never sure about colors. They look a bit different between my phone, laptop and the bigger monitor connected to my docking station. Excellent look, Michael, with the color palette head to toe. Great, soft overcoat too.

No clouds, no wind, choppy surf and currents, but I went for a good long swim anyway.

Wonderful hats, Bowen. The four dent requires a hat with a black belt in creasing. It looks like the hats are sneaking up on you again.

I'm not much for western style hats, but I think I'd call this one a thin ribboned, wide brimmed lords hat and wear it anyway. Splendid, Jared.

It is a brand. I see them on a regular basis over here in the vintage shops. Unsure if they're actually English made; could be one of those German brands using "fancy" sounding English names.

That would make sense mate, it still has the old owners initials in metal plates on the sweat which is a feature of older European hats. Thanks for the update
