What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

No. My wife’s camera. Daniele put paid to my plans for a new camera with his selection of hats in my size. I’ve decided no more hats until I get my new camera (except maybe the bowler that Stefan @steur has been promising me).

You are probably in camera paradise over there so you probably know more than I do about this. I am sure you are looking at some very cool much nicer cameras. I have a couple of DSLRs but lately I have been buying some cheap old used point and shoot cameras off ebay lately just to check the color rendering and sharpness of photos. Since I am more likely to toss a point and shoot camera in a pocket or in a day pack and have it for shots when I don't feel like dragging a DSLR. Long ago I purchased a Fuji A170 as a display model on clearance at a store. I takes some of the very best photos of any camera I have ever used, however it has a scratch on the lens or CCD that leaves a magenta streak. So I have bought some cameras for $12 to $30 for the heck of it to find a point and shoot that tends to take good photos that are color accurate. One had a problem, others have worked great but I am picky about sellers and apparent condition of the camera. The one that does the best with color rendition and sharpness straight out of the camera is a Fuji A235 (same series as A170 and A220) and it takes AA batteries (which last longer in it than most cameras) so in a pinch charging batteries isn't critical for some improptu shots. These little Fuji cameras get almost no real reviews or attention from anyone but they are great for their intended purpose.
No 2 is a Canon ELPH 130 ( a true pocket camera), really great photos. The third is a Olympus SZ14 with a high zoom for birds and wildlife. I use Snapseed, a free photo editor, on my phones for quick photo editing (resizing is a little odd has to be preset for saving/sharing.) I use Polar photo, also a free photo editor, for resizing, cropping, and some lighting adjustments. I do adjust color or white balance sometimes to try to get felt colors to be closer to what my eye sees or sometimes I do push the saturation up a bit to give a photo a little more pop. Some of the Fuji A235 and Canon ELPH130 just need cropping and or resizing to be smaller for posting online. Straight out of the camera or phone most photos are much larger than they need to be for posting online and they just take up lots of bandwidth. All cameras can take bad out-of-focus photos but some tend to capture more good photos. Examples straight from camera but resized.

This is a dye job gone south so I am making my version of the ZZ Top hat. Thinking its 7" crown/2" brim is crying out for a nice horsehair band. When finished will post here in the "What Hat......" ....promise!

Thanks for that. Interesting read. I used an entry level EOS film camera before moving on to an entry level EOS digital. More recently I’ve been using an intermediate/semi-pro level Olympus mirrorless. I’m really happy with the Olympus and it will remain my number one camera, but I’m keen to have something really small to chuck in my pocket or bag to go anywhere. I’ve been looking at prime lens compacts. The only options really seem to be Ricoh and Fuji. The top Fuji is pretty expensive and not much smaller than my mirrorless. I’m leaning towards the Fuji XF10. It seems to get similar reviews to the Ricoh, but quite a bit cheaper.

Here is a perfect example of why I try to throw in a point and shoot camera, the Fuji A235. If you have a newer iPhone it may be better than many cameras. But whilst driving and looking at houses our Toyota came under siege but these two ruffians. They would not leave and any attempt by me to pull forward caused them to run to front of my vehicle and block my path. No amount of hooting and hollering would cause them to back off. My wife got out of the car in an attempt to intimidate them, which worked unsurprisingly, but as soon as she turned her back and they would rush to peck our tires and generally refuse to allow us to leave. At one point I considered diving out the drivers side window and subduing one of them in order to celebrate Thanksgiving several months early. Perhaps I should have not yelped when we first spotted them. They appeared to consider my tires their primary rivals for the objects of their desire. I am sure I was saved by my trusty Burnt Oak Akubra Fedora (not pictured during all the commotion). I did consider tossing it at them but I feared for its safety. If I am able to get a photo of the Akubra later and overcome the PTSD of the event I may post a blow by blow account in Fedoras Afield...

The next photo is the point at which I considered grabbing one of them and hightailing towards home...and a freezer. I refrained mostly out of fear

I have a Fuji XT10 which I love and it takes very sharp photos but sometimes the colors are just a bit muted. It is probably the best portrait camera I have as it seems to get faces pretty well. Just use the stock lenses. I wish I had had it for the above mentioned siege. I think I have less than $17 in the A235 so its a beater but in like new condition. Good luck on your next camera I will look forward to postings.

Looks like a happy accident to me. I kind of dig the look and colour. Can’t wait to see the results.
