This week I will C. G. Wilke Guben, Germany Hat Factory. Founded by Carl Gottlob Wilke in 1822 Guben, Germany. He invented the weather-proof wool hat and was a major contributor in the mechanization of hat making. C. G. Wilke manufactured both Wool and Fur (including Velour) Soft and Stiff Felt Hats. C. G. Wilke Factory was severely damaged during WWII. Guben was the largest hat making center in Germany up to WWII but was heavily damaged during the war. What remained of the Guben Hat Industry infrastructure after WWII was nationalized as VEB United Hutwerke Guben (Guben was located in the GDR).

C. G. Wilke Guben "Haar Rival" possibly late 1920s early 1930s. The Fur "Haar" Felt is very dense with a well executed smooth finish. Great form and very comfortable to wear.

Unfortunately the liner is water stained.

Added a new band just for a little accent of color to my hemp Stratoliner, to wear with a Wabash mask on a later than usual Masked Corona Crawl today. The color of the sunset reflecting on clouds off the Eastern shore, with the moon rising added a little accent of color to the sky. Made it back up the hill in the dark and home just before curfew.

Looks good, Randall. I have one like that. Not like vintage but it is a good hot weather hat and I don't worry too much if it blows off or I walk under a tree branch.

Good Monday morning folks.

Yesterday evening I took a walkabout in a Knox Westlite. This durable hat has a stiffer brim that was needed in the stiff wind. The bigger brim works with this hat's proportions.

This mornings long 2 hour jaunt was done in a Gannon Wanderer (inspired by the Stetson of said name). This silvermist felted fedora was worn in the same hard charging manor of the Gannon this past weekend. I was curious as to the effect on this black leather sweat. The natural (very comfy) sweat I perspired through on Staurday. Today the moisture did not. Damp, but good to go.

I stopped in similar locations during my swift walk to wipe off my bald head and brim imitating my natural sweat jaunt of the other day. Today my decision is to have commissioned hats to have the finished leather sweat and not elect for the most comfortable natural leather) sweat. This was not a "study" or intended to do anything but to satisfy my curiosity. My hat lifestyle is my hat lifestyle. I offer the above as an anecdote.

Wearing my Fed IV for my morning dog walk on this historic day!

A little known fact is that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York.


The ship hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Go out on this day, grab a couple of slices of Wonderbread and a jar of Hellman’s mayonnaise and have a party. You know I will!

View attachment 232790 View attachment 232789 Carefully flipping some burgers and things in my VS whiskey. The mask is a fabric the wife got for me. It looked cooler on the website. Different loaves of bread, cuz I’m the bread guy, but in person it looks like a 1970’s couch cover.

No reason to look like a schlub while flipping burgers. Great lines on that VS. I need a hat in whiskey, love that tone. I think my mom's couch had that fabric!

Mid-90s in Fort Worth, TX today. Chose another vented straw for some errands. This time it's a VS Art Fawcett.

We are going to have our first 80 degree days later this week. I really need to step up my straw game. This one from Art is a true classic, love it!

Tonight I headed out in a Stetson Playboy in sage.

I got home and have been working on prepping a hat to wear. I have been putting some effort into an unlined gray Stetson Playboy. I have another unlined Stetson Playboy, but this hat is older. The unlined means that this unreeded sweat hat is light and ready for warm and cool weather in my neighborhood.
Hear is the hat.

I have posted in the comparision thread three gray Playboys. Here is a teaser pic.

Day 5 of 31 Hat Parade. Today we travel to Italy for one of my finest Borsalino hats. I won't be wearing this one while working on the Koi pond, so images are from the archives. This 1950s Bismuto (gray) Borsalino Homburg is in "Qualia Extra Superiore". The fine lines and felt of this dress hat are an example of the best of this famous Italian maker's offerings. The "Homburg" style goes by many names in different countries, in Italy they are commonly called a "Lobbia". Even if I'm not going to wear this one outside today, I did go back into the hat room to fondle it for a while. Simple pleasures in Casa Lockdown!
