Saw that and said "DEAR LORD!!!" I do believe that gets my hat o' the day vote. Simply, extraordinary.

The wafer brim treatment is one of my favorites. And that ribbon... WOW! The contrasting edge color is uber cool. Is that ribbon original?

Age before beauty.

100 years ago was glory time for hats and styles ran the gamut to offer a scale and form for any face, any time of year. This diminutive beauty gives away nothing to its 8" tall siblings, except size. A 6x3, curled to present a 2 1/4" brim width, shows its place in the century club with a wide sweatband with rolled edge, The Fray imprint, a large scalloped size tag and stub bow at the sweatband seam. It is a bit too small for me to show how it might be worn open or creased but that never stops me from giving it a go.

Oh... We struggled about that.

Bullet Cat pushed hard (and quite convincingly) for the number forty being 2nd.

But, the main thing going against it is the lack of alcohol content. Essentially, if the number forty could get us hammered, it would have beat out The Champagne of Beers for 2nd place.

Alcohol content is a factor that carries tremendous persuasive weight.

I would think Bullet Cat would prefer Coors Light.

Excellent observation, Jim. And he does.

But I don't let him get the final say.

Although I will let him wear my hats sometimes. That seems to minimize any festering resentment he may be harboring.

What a beautiful example of a hat. It has great proportions. Thanks for bringing it out and describing it.

Your comment reminds me how interesting it is to browse the American Hatter on Google Books and see all of the different shapes and styles offered in the ads. It is unfortunate that it is so difficult to locate examples that represent that diversity. That seems especially true of the soft felts.

I pine for a tall, square-crowned stiff felt. From a stylistic standpoint those remind me of a snapshot from somewhere in the middle of the evolution from top hat to the lower crown stiff felts of the thirties and forties. Just fantastic...

Oh well... One day...
