What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

While heavy sleet was falling (and still is falling) I tried on several hats to go with the greatcoat, which proved two things to me. First: it's hard to match a colour precisely. Second: I need more grey hats! None of my hats matched the coat exactly but a few of them came close. The coat leans towards the blue end of the spectrum (looks a bit green on my screen). Borsalino Selenio I wore today was a nice match (a bit darker).
As for the coat: here's a full view of it. No labels whatsoever inside it, but I remember the saleswoman saying it was eastern European (either Russian or Polish production). It was a quick picture and I need to practice my military posture

I like it a lot. That may be my next hat band for one of my westerns.

Yes, that is pretty much what your website says as well as my original translation (which is somewhere really far up there in this thread by now), but it is interesting that the difference in all three translations happens exactly at that part of the ad where the grammar gets weird. Did your friend by chance mention anything about the grammar being special in anyway?

Thanks for the update, if I ever get a chance I’ll ask a German friend or two about it since I know exactly what my question is. If I get an interesting answer I’ll be sure to report back.

Yes I asked him but he didn't comment. I asked a follow up about the grammar. I also asked a cousin that lives in Baden but haven't heard back. I will post this on the German - Austrian thread because some people in Germany might comment.

That's the look for me, Michael. The lighter works too, but I like this one much better. It's more balanced in my view.

I'll have a look if I can find any labels on the greatcoat. No obvious ones in sight. It's not a vintage one but a modern production. Came from an army surplus store though.

I think I detect a psychological difference between us. I generally find it easier or more appealing to have something in contrast, either color or tonally, than something that matches. Could just be my bad eyes. Ha ha.

I like your use of the word "pate" for head. I need my son William Pate after my grandfather and me . There is actually a Pateville Georgia named after the Pate family that lives in that area some time long ago. It was my great great grandmother's maiden name. My daughters and son often refer to his head as his pate.

Beautiful Borsalino and a perfect pairing with that Great Coat. I've been searching on the web to find a match, but no hits. I think it may have some age, I'll widen my research. The red makes the whole look "pop". You are an inspiration. Grey hat will be on the way, more of a light spring one though.

My friend (Herbert Jennissen) who owns Hut Neubarth in Augsburg and is a certified (Vienna) master hat maker sent me this.

"The Rehfus advertise should read:

The lightest and most elegant stiff gentleman's hat
of an unsurpassed durability shows the trademark above in golden print on the sweatband.
Wonderful ventilation ..."

I think this is close to the translation on my site.

Trying to perform a literal translation might be the issue.

Excellent, Mayser, thank you for sharing - this solves the mystery! There is indeed something funny going on in this ad and your friend was able to see through it whereas neither I nor the individual who translated the ad on your website caught it (and no, the translation on your website is not completely accurate).

It’s this: there is a period between two words in the ad that makes it look like the sentence ends. The two words are “unuebertroffen.Dauerhaftigkeit.” I don’t know why that period is there unless the German of the day required it because the “von” just before “unuebertroffen” is an abbreviation (“v. unuebertroffen.Dauerhaftigkeit”). I never heard of a rule like that so it could also have been a typo (the print also recommends it’s a typo since there’s no space after the period, but surely they would have caught a typo like that!). What the period meant was that when I read the ad the first sentence looked incomplete - there’s no verb in it - and the second sentence was utterly wonky because of reasons I explained elsewhere.

Sorry, this could go on, but the confusion on your website and in my translation were both due to reading that period as a full stop.

I recommend if possible you update your website with your friend’s translation because his is superior to what is on your website now (I just checked). And please thank your friend for the translation - he solved the mystery of the wonky grammar!

Do you reckon he can tell us why there’s a period in the middle of the sentence?
