Yes, a time when plastic spelled optimism. As you can see from the content label, the plastic fiber used in this hat is Vinyon - a PVC fiber that was invented in 1939 and seems to have qualities as a binder in non-woven fabrics (i.e., felt). This plastic felt is constructed in the manner of a cloth hat. There are none of the usual Stetson labels inside - even the size label is non-standard. I've wondered if the entire manufacture was outsourced to another factory.

I believe your hat is a little bit older than you think. Prices went up after the OPS period. Plenty of ads on the lounge from 1954 show the 12.95 price. Don't just believe anything you read on the lounge as gospel truth, and don't believe me either. Take time and investigate for your self. Nice hat.
I remember seeing a listing of Stetson pricing at one time and the price jump seemed later. It sure feels like a mid fifties vs a early 60s felt. Really soft and ultra light. Sometime I'll have to weigh it, but it is by far my lightest felt hat. I'll go back through the thousands of pages I've read to refresh my memory as to dating. The problem is, no extant mfg labeling.

I'll be in the Everyman hat again today. Maybe change it up tomorrow. You guys and gals keep posting wonderful lids. Keep it up, and have a great Tuesday.

I’m sorry I’ve missed so many days of great hats. As Redfokker will tell you, when it is tech week in theater there is a saying, “No, I can’t. It’s tech week.” And Red, I’m director, tech director, light designer, light operator, set designer, set builder, costumes, make-up, and, oh, yeah, teacher.

Java – Sharp.

RJR – That’s a great hat on you.

Bob – A classic.

Fabio – Now that’s how to dress with a boater.

And a belated thanks to JoshBru for this awesome Borsalino.
